How to sideload install Xbox Game Pass app on older Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Cube models

Microsoft has released its Xbox Game Pass app in the Amazon Appstore, but it’s only available to install directly on the 2nd-gen Fire TV Stick 4K and 2nd-gen Fire TV Stick 4K Max. However, the app works on older Fire TV devices running Fire OS 7 if you sideload it using the following instructions.

To determine which Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, or Fire TV Cube model you have, see this guide.

Works on…

  • 3rd-gen Fire TV Stick (2020)
  • 1st-gen Fire TV Stick Lite (2020)
  • 1st-gen Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2021)
  • 2nd-gen Fire TV Cube (2019)
  • 3rd-gen Fire TV Cube (2022)
  • Fire TV Smart TVs running Fire OS 7 and 8
  • Android TV devices using modified APK (e.g., Nvidia Shield TV, Mi Stick, …)
  • Google TV devices using modified APK (e.g., Chromecast 4K, Onn 4K, …)

Does not work on…

  • 1st-gen Fire TV (2014)
  • 2nd-gen Fire TV (2015)
  • 3rd-gen Fire TV (2017)
  • 1st-gen Fire TV Stick (2014)
  • 2nd-gen Fire TV Stick (2016)
  • 1st-gen Fire TV Stick 4K (2018)
  • 1st-gen Fire TV Cube (2017)
  • Fire TV Smart TVs running Fire OS 5 or 6
  • Fire Tablets

Guide

If you need a more detailed guide with screenshots for sideloading apps, see this guide.

  1. Install the Downloader app from the Amazon Appstore.
  2. Enable developer options by following this guide.
  3. Grant Downloader to install apps from unknown sources under: Settings > My Fire TV > Developer Options > Install unknown apps
  4. Open Downloader and grant any permission requests that appear.
  5. Enter short code 2202 into the text field on the home screen. (If you’re following this guide to install the Xbox app on an Android TV or Google TV device, use code 2203 instead to install the modified versions of the app.)
  6. Select “Install” after the download completes.
  7. Launch the Xbox app. You may need to open it from: Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications
  8. Log in to your Xbox/Microsoft account and you’re ready to play. If you are unable to pair your controller through the Xbox app, pair it through: Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Game Controllers
Updates

7/18/2024: Code 2202 is now for the newer v3.0.6 of the Xbox app. If you want the old v3.0.4 app, use code 22021.

In case you want to update the compatibility list, this does not work on TCL Alto 8 Fire TV edition. Error parsing the package.

That’s not the TV giving you that error. I am using fire stick Pro 4K Maxx or whatever the original one of those was called. I also have the exact same error. I’m currently investigating to see if I can get around it
