Now that Amazon has announced that their Prime Exclusive Phones will no longer have ads on their lockscreens, updates are beginning to roll out to existing devices that removes ads. If your device hasn’t received the update and you don’t want to wait, you can remove the ads yourself by sideloading this APK file (mirror) onto your phone. It’s an official update from Amazon to the offers app that is already on your device. This APK was pulled from a Moto G5 Plus, but it should also work on other Prime exclusive Phone makes and models.
Would this work with Fire Tablets too?
No, unfortunately not.
Is there anything that works with the Fire 7 Tablet? Anything new I mean?
I spent about 35 seconds in a chat with support to remove the ads from my tablet. Was amazingly easy.
Yeah- just do the “Be nice to the customer service representative” method via chat. They removed the ads off of both my 10in and 8in Fire HD’s. I told them the ad screens were confusing to my parent’s. Just have your serial number handy
The update is pushed through the Amazon Offers App on the Prime Phones. Update your software to see the lockscreen removed. It was pushed on my Moto e, Moto e plus and Moto G4 phones.
But the real question is why did Amazon abandoned their own software?
I think it’s because nobody sees lockscreens anymore. Fingerprint readers on phones are so fast now that you’ve usually unlocked the device before you’ve even brought it up to your eyes. There’s no point in having lockscreen ads that hurt phone sales when they’re not even being seen by anyone. I bet we’ll see a different way for Amazon to monetize these discounted phones within a year.
EDIT: To clarify, I don’t think existing phones will get new ads. I think future Prime Exclusive Phones will have something other than just Amazon apps installed.
