The Amazon Appstore is growing everyday, but if it’s offerings are not enough for you, here is how to install the Google Play Store on the Amazon Fire TV. Your Fire TV will have to be rooted to install the Google Play Store. You will also need a USB mouse for one of the steps. Once you have the Google Play Store installed, you will be able to download and install apps from the Play Store directly on your Amazon Fire TV. Update

Since the Google Play Store does not know the Fire TV’s capabilities, it marks most apps as incompatible. We’ve written a guide on how to trick the Google Play Store into thinking the Fire TV is a Nexus 7 tablet so that most apps in the Play Store can be installed on the Fire TV. You can find that guide here.

    Thanks

    • AFTVnews says:

Thanks! I’m glad you’re finding the site useful.

      • Brn says:

I’d like to thank you for all of your guides and hard work on this website. I purchased a Fire TV a couple months back and have enjoyed it to the fullest because of you. I really do appreciate it!

    • Mike says:

So everything worked like a charm . My only issue is now when I click on the green install for a game the device locks up for about a minute and never installs.

I do have security on all my other devices when it comes to the store could this be the issue?

    • Tim says:

      Did u root your firetv

  2. Luis says:

Do I need to have all of them installed all the time? Or can I delete some after?

  3. Trent says:

I have followed all the instructions outlined here, including making sure that all four Google Play apk’s are installed, but when I attempt to start the Play Store, the screen flashes and returns me to the Settings > Applications menu.

    • Goodhur says:

      @trent:
I had the same issue. I fixed it by uninstalling the google play store in the applications menu. On my computer I changed the name by only removing the spaces. The reinstalled via ADB. It started no problem after that. Hope this works for you.

      @FireTVnews:
Great job please keep it up!!

  4. Ryan says:

Play Store working but not showing paid apps, only free ones. What can be causing this?

  5. z31fanatic says:

Thanks for the guide. It worked for me.
One thing I don’t understand is that I search for the netflix app or amazon apps in the Play store but they aren’t available. Anyone know why?

  6. DR says:

I’m experiencing the same problem, as described by @Trent and followed the instructions of @Goodhur and still not working, the screen flashes and returns me to the Settings > Applications menu.

    Please advise.

  7. Osc000 says:

Thank you So much for the guide work perfect .!!

I just wish one day they will come out with a boot loader unlock so I can removed amz os and install kitKat :-) .!!

  8. tpabeav says:

I have followed the instructions several times to the details, but I still can not see Google Play in my Applications under Settings. I do see Xposed Installer. Am I missing something?

  9. Gilad says:

Will this allow me to make in-app purchases?

  10. Chris says:

Hi, do you need a mouse for this or can you get Google Play by just using the remote? Thanks!

    • AFTVnews says:

Yes, you need a mouse for step 5 in the second section (HDXPosed Module setup). There doesn’t seem to be any way to click the little checkbox without a mouse.

  11. Chris says:

Google Play won’t work, it won’t launch. I am rooted and did all the steps but I can’t get Google to launch.

    • AFTVnews says:

First try installing the 4 Google APKs again using:
      adb install -r filename.apk

If that doesn’t work, try uninstalling them and reinstalling them.

  12. Ray says:

I am too having difficulties with the screen flashing Google Play Store after installing the Google APK files I’ve tried removing all spaces method, placing the “adb install -r FileName” method, resetting and trying again. I have even tried to the sql editor and allow non Google apks. Is there a sure way to do this or is my Fire TV unable?

  13. JD says:

I’m unable to get llama – location profiles from google play store – it’s one of the perquisites for launching the fire tv into xbmc. It says my device isn’t compatible with this app, same goes for netflix, any ideas?

  14. Richard Sohne says:

Thanks so much for a wonderfully helpful site!

  15. dev says:

I’m not sure if the order of install makes a difference but I had luck going: Framework, account manager, services, store. Good luck!

  16. DIzzo says:

Hi, I cannot seem to get past the Xposed framework install. How long should the install take? Mine has the circle spinning for 15 mins already.

  17. Moe says:

When I try to side load the 4 apk with the fire tv side loader I keep getting an error that says to many files for apk and verifier files only. Any ideas on how to fix this or what I may be don’t wrong? Thanks

  18. Chris says:

You don’t need them all, just Google services and the Play app. I just have these two and it works perfectly. But the Play store is VERY limited in the number of apps it has on the Fire TV. 1Mobile is WAY better.

  19. GlammaGeek says:

Excellent. Thanks for this. Works perfectly. I too had the issue of the Play Store not launching, but took the spaces out of the apk names, then reinstalled and all is fine.

  20. harrisonddo says:

Do you have a working link for HDXPosed (the link above doesn’t work)? I tried to find one but I’m a n00b on this kind of thing. Thanks.

  21. i0ls says:

Ill second that dead link for the HDXPosed. I am looking around for another link but I just don’t want to sideload the wrong one and screw anything up. x2 on the n00bness

  22. Yves says:

Thanks for the instructions… Much appreciated!!!

  23. Balaji says:

    Followed all the steps
Play store is crashing when launched

  24. Balaji says:

    Followed all the steps
Play store is crashing when launched
    Can you help?

    • AFTVnews says:

Be sure Xposed is active (see step 1-4). You can also try renaming the 4 google apks to something simple, like a.apk, b.apk, c.apk, d.apk, and reinstalling all four. Some have found that the spaces in the apk names is causing issues while installing.

      • Balaji says:

Finally got it working fine now. Thought latest amazon firmware(51.1.1.0_user_511070220) is causing the problem.
I just uninstalled the playstore and then reinstalled it. Then it started to work fine. Thanks for the good tutorial.

  25. Paul says:

    How do you sideload modules?

  26. Ryan says:

I got the xposed installer done but I downloaded the hdexposed file try to sideload it and having no luck.

  27. Pete says:

I am not getting prompted for two step verification. It just rejects my log in. Any ideas?

  28. Bill says:

When I download the hdxposed module, it’s a zip file instead of an apk, is that correct?

If it is, what exactly should I be sideloading for this step…the zip file?

  29. Scott says:

I tried this on the latest rootable software version – No matter what I do, and I’ve tried everything I can think of, and followed this and similar guides – When I go to log into my Google Account, it immediately states my username and password don’t match. It’s not my password, (though I did try changing it too). Even if you Hit “New” account it immediately fails as well.

Something is not working anymore. Any ideas?

    • Scott says:

Finally figured it out. I had 2-Step on my account, and as someone pointed out – apparently you do have to use an app specific password. I just didn’t understand you have to go to Google’s Website on your computer to get that password. Got it to work. Actually I installed a slightly newer version of Play Store, and still works like a charm finally!

  30. Scott says:

Bill – I renamed it apk.. But yeah that was throwing me off too.

  31. Shon says:

Brand new box today and everything has gone as advertized except HDXPosed-1.3.apk will not complete the sideload. I am using adbFire v1.04. ADB is running. Device is connected. The progress bar shows full green but I’m waiting for a pop up window to say install is complete. It’s been over 10 minutes.

    Anyone have any ideas?

  32. Jay163 says:

It installed correctly but just have 1 problem. It says “No Connection” and I don’t know what else to try.

    • Racho says:

Try to reconnect your device abd it will work. Believe me i spent hours rooting and moding AFTV,and now its open, i cant wait until i install full android platform. Enjoy

  33. jm says:

I cancel the “sideloading” before the process was finish….. so now I can’t open the Google Play Store….. I already try to re-sideload them…. but it says the files already exist….. any clue???

  34. Ryan says:

Sorry I have a dumb question. I know the answer but just wanted to confirm.
What is the use of Google Playstore in fire TV? Can we install the games and other apps from the appstore and be able to use with the Fire TV? Do we need any additional remote to play some games downloaded from appstore?
    Thanks in advance.

    • AFTVnews says:

The purpose is to have access to apps that are not in the Amazon appstore, but are in the Google Play store.
This also allows you to install non-free apps you’ve purchased from the Google Play Store on your Fire TV.

  35. Rick says:

I followed these instructions and installed Market Helper 2.0 (beta), then corrected it to 1.1. I can’t figure out how to make 1.1 work now. Did 2.0 leave something behind? Another question, where can we get the latest apks for google, and would it help?

    • Rick says:

1.1 works after I unblock amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net and softwareupdates.amazon.com on my router. Does blocking these sites keep other apps from updating (Netflix, YouTube…)? What about disabling updates with “pm disable com.amazon.dcp?”

  36. Terry C says:

Marketplace 2.0 beta worked for me. I was able to install a previously uninstallable NFL Sunday Ticket app.

  37. Joseph says:

Another great article, thank you. I do have a question though. I did this mod, and this one, http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-remove-unwanted-home-screen-menu-items/#more-1294 , yesterday.

Now my Fire TV won’t sleep. Wondering if anyone else has seen that with either of these mods?

    • AFTVnews says:

I have not heard of either mod causing the Fire TV to not sleep. Try force quitting all of your apps from Settings > Applications > Manage.

The most common cause for the Fire TV not sleeping is a “paused” app still running in the background.

      • Joseph says:

I wouldn’t think so either. I will check the running apps when I get home. Thanks again for the great site.

        • Joe says:

FYI just to update, it was the Google Play Store app, it was not closing. I forced closed it and the FT went to sleep after 30 minutes.

Though, through my testing it appears I might have to do this every time to be sure. I opened the PS app again and waiting 30 minutes and the FT didn’t sleep.

Force closed the PS app again, 30 minutes later FT went to sleep. Thanks again for the great site.

  38. Rayosx says:

Is there a way to get the last update from Google Play Store and install it in AFTV?

I have APK EXtractor installed on my nexus 5, maybe I can extract all files, I just need to know wich files exactly I need to extract.

    Please let me know,

Also, what is the best approach to have the latest version from xposed installer

  39. Paul_Aris says:

I am side loading these files using Mac OS 10.6.8 Terminal. I removed the spaced and the ( ) and when I click on the play store to launch the Play store it just goes back to the same screen Launch play store. I am thinking Maybe the ( ) need to be on the file name. But I thought one of my errors in Terminal showed ( ) so I removed them from the file name. Any ideas? How can I remove all four files and try again? I am thinking with adb using uninstall command?

    • AFTVnews says:

Yeah, using ADBs uninstall command is best. Remember, with the uninstall command, you’ll need to enter the package name instead of the file name. You can determine the package name by running:
      aapt dump badging

      • Paul_Aris says:

Need a little help how to determine pacakge name. I assume this is done through terminal. I am not an expert at this stuff.

        Thanks

        • AFTVnews says:

Just like you run adb, you run aapt. It’s included in the Android SDK (where you got adb). You run:
          aapt dump badging

A bunch of stuff will be displayed. The first line will be “package: name=”. The package name is right after that.

I went ahead and got the name of all 4 APKs in this guide for you. They are:

          • com.google.android.gsf.login
          • com.google.android.gms
          • com.android.vending
          • com.google.android.gsf

So to uninstall them all using adb, run the following 4 commands:

          1. adb uninstall com.google.android.gsf.login
          2. adb uninstall com.google.android.gms
          3. adb uninstall com.android.vending
          4. adb uninstall com.google.android.gsf
  40. Paul_Aris says:

Ok, I was able to uninstall everything. I renamed a couple of files and reinstalled. This time I was able to launch the playstore and log in . After logging in I got kicked out. Now it will not launch. It just goes back to Launch Application.

  41. Emilio Rincón-Gallardo says:

    Thanks, works perfectly.

  42. DJ1 says:

What’s the fix for Google PlayStore going back to Settings > Manage Application screen after opening it. I ve un-installed the Google Play Store and renamed the apk without any spaces like GooglePlayStore_4.6.17.apk and installed it back. But i have the same issue. Any help is appreciated. All these started happening after upgrading to the latest rooted version of AFTV.. not sure if that’s casuing any issues.

  43. DJ1 says:

Update – I ve un-installed all 4 apks manually via adb and installed them using -r option. Now i am stuck with “No Connection” error as soon a i login to PlayStore. – I ve un-installed and done it again but still the same. Any help guys !

  44. Stacey says:

I’m did the first step with sideloading the exposed.installer but I am having a problem trying to understand this second step:

    Second, setup the HDXPosed Module…
    1.Download the HDXPosed module (Source/Mirror)
2.Sideload the HDXPosed module onto your Fire TV

When I do download HDXPosed it is not an APK but a zip file.
The link says HDXPosed-13.apk but it is a compressed zip and if you extract it there is no APK in it?

So I don’t know what to do with it. How do you sideload it or install it when it is a zip file?

I tried adb install like you would with a apk but that fails:
    C:\FTV\development\adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20140702\sdk\platform-tools>adb install c:\FTV\HDXPosed-1.3.zip
    error: protocol fault (no status)
    error: protocol fault (no status)
    error: device not found
    – waiting for device –

Are you suppose to push it? If so to where?

    • Stacey says:

tried install again and it put it somewhere. maybe that worked

      C:\FTV\development\adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20140702\sdk\platform-tools>adb install c:\FTV\HDXPosed-1.3.zip
      167 KB/s (37699 bytes in 0.220s)
      pkg: /data/local/tmp/HDXPosed-1.3.zip
      Success

      C:\FTV\development\adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20140702\sdk\platform-tools>

  45. GlammaGeek says:

I have a question I’ve not seen either asked or answered anywhere else: How do you log out of or remove your Google account credentials? Even after several uninstall/reboot/reinstall cycles, I can’t seem to get it to go back to that first screen where it asks for your credentials. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • Ho says:

I am actually trying to do the same thing. I bought a used Fire TV and the google account from the old owner keeps popping up. So annoying!
I might try a factory reset, but am afraid that it will update the firmware?

  46. Frank says:

I have two factor and my password wasn’t being accepted. I had to generate a new app specific password and use that to login. Thought I’d mention it as the instructions show the two factor process working differently.

  47. hans says:

    Hello
my aftv is not rooted cause i got a device with newest OS.
I just want to watch series with “dizitv hd” , the app needs google play services to work.

is there any options to get them to work? i personally dont need the play store, i just want to watch series with these app :)

i installed the 4 apks, logged in Play Store, but it says no connection found

  48. bclear says:

Great guide got me working in no time. I do have one question how to add a second google account. My wife has a couple of games she bought and wants them install but I can’t seem figure out how to add two gmail accounts. Does anyone have any idea?

    • bclear says:

Ok figured how to add a second account. I read on XDA that adding google play music there is “add a account” option

  49. Oleh says:

    I have a question.
I can’t launch Google Play Store after all apk-files installations.
The installation process was carried out correctly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • Oleh says:

      Additions.
I have a rooted Fire TV with Pre-Rooted Stock Software by rbox (51.1.3.0_513011820) and ClockworkMod Custom Recovery by rbox (6.0.5.1.2).

      • AFTVnews says:

Some people seem to be having issues with the spaces and characters in the APK filenames. Try uninstalling the four APK files using these commands:

        1. adb uninstall com.google.android.gsf.login
        2. adb uninstall com.google.android.gms
        3. adb uninstall com.android.vending
        4. adb uninstall com.google.android.gsf

Then rename all four APK files to something simple like a.apk, b.apk, etc.. and repeat the guide from the beginning.

        • RustyBoy says:

add that in the STEP! i haved 4 hours trying to figure out what is the damn problem and now i found this comment! jajajaja

  50. Oleh says:

Thank you very much for help.
I did as you wrote. But still I can’t launch Google Play Store.
The screen flashes and comes back, when I do the steps, which are defined in 3.3 paragraph.

    • Oleh says:

I have a rooted Fire TV with Pre-Rooted Stock Software by rbox (51.1.3.0_513011820). Should I install a different version? For example, 51.1.3.0_513011520 or 51.1.1.0_511070220.

  51. Matt says:

Like Oleh I have the same issue, I installed all four apk’s after renaming them, but the Play Store launch just flashes. I’m on a pre-rooted 5.1.3.0 with CWM 6.0.5.1.2.

Are the uninstalls required before renaming the APK’s and side loading them?

    • ranmapanda says:

If you have already loaded the APK’s then you will want to uninstall them before reloading them. Just make sure there are no spaces in the file names.

    • netghoster says:

Same here. The play store worked great until yesterday I flashed the pre-rooted 5.1.3.0 with CWM 6.0.5.1.2. After flash, the play store can still run at first but not responding to the remote controller correctly. I can’t get the cursor moved to the menu bar on top of the screen where has menu button on the left corner and search button on the right. I went ahead try to update the ES file Explorer which I installed before I flashed the pre-rooted 5.1.3.0. The play store crashed after I clicked on the update button and I never was able to get it relaunched again.

  52. sushi says:

After installing google play i start to get Google asking permission to regularly check installed apps.

Is there a way to disable this??

  53. SC says:

Problems too. I tried some variations including the latest Play Store. I get a “Check your connection and try again” message. Some apps also complain about not having a connection. I’m hard wired and the standard apps work, eg Netflix, etc

  54. John says:

I too had the issue where I was getting Play store flashing on start but then right back to FTV menu… I ended up having to uninstall the store APK (adb uninstall com.android.vending) and then download and sideload a newer version of the play store found here:
    http://www.redmondpie.com/google-play-apk-4.4.22-download/

Now it works :) thanks everyone!!!

Note: I did reboots between each operation

    • James says:

I was having same issue as above. Tried renaming APKs first and they did not work. Just replace the play store APK with the one John linked to above and it will open.

  55. Sterling says:

Thank you, John. The updated apk for the Play Store worked for me. Previous suggestions involving renaming of files did not work.

  56. J Gulnac says:

First step, number 6 when I click on Install/Update, it says “Failed to get root access” anyone know why and what I can do?

  57. John M says:

J Gulnac, I have the same problem. Someone please help.

  58. Alex says:

Thank you guys. Worked like a charm. Couldn’t have been easier!!!

  59. Craig says:

Hi guys. Managed to install and added account details but when I open the play store it get “no connection”. Tried with WiFi and cable. No luck. Any ideas? Thanks

  60. Ivan says:

My AFTV is rooted and I have external powered USB HDD. My problem is when I access Google Play Store (5.1.11) to search for something it lags and the app closes on its own. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this problem and how can I fix it. Thanks

  61. anthony says:

my games show that i need internet connection to recieve daily bonus, how do i get rid of it?

  62. Raven says:

Anyone figure out how to fix the “No Connection” issue? After the latest firmware update the store was crashing at launch. I re-installed all the .apk files but now I’m getting the No Connection error when I launch it.

  63. kami says:

Clear data & re-open appstore it should help with no connection issue

  64. Richard says:

I installed the latest custom ROM and now the Play Store just shows a spinning circle. I replaced the google apps including the latest play store apk, but that didn’t help. Any advice?

  65. hintzsche says:

So there is no way to get the Google playstore in the FIDE TV stick? Is there anywhere the Google playstore apk for nexus player? Cause its made for tvs

  66. Archman says:

I also installed the latest custom ROM. The Play Store worked for a while but now I just get a spinning circle. I re-installed the apps including the latest play store apk, It looked like it worked but it really didn’t. I got the spinning circle again. Any advice?

Apparently you can install Play Store on non-rooted FTVs also, as seen in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/themes-apps/how-to-install-gapps-root-t2960705 The only downside is that you can’t fool it into thinking Fire TV is a Nexus 7 tables, since Market Helper requires root :(

However, if you keep side-loading apps via adb, Play Store’s “incompatible” message will be ignored.

You may need to update this guide. I was getting a white screen when loading google play.

I found this solution which has worked great:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/help/google-play-store-white-screen-rooted-t3174877

Also there has been an update for market helper:

    Thanks for your great guides!!

I have checked the software version on my fire TV stick and it shows as unrootable. Is there currently any work around for this?? I’d really like to get my google apps on there if there is any way to do it.

Can anyone confirm that the 2nd generation Fire TV CAN have the GOOGLE PLAY STORE added on a rooted unit? As much as I try, I cannot seem to get past the “ERROR RETRIEVING INFORMATION FROM SERVER [RH-01]” failure.

Is there a fix for this issue? I rooted my 2nd gen FTV and am running the latest rom.

  74. Sc0rp10 says:

is play store still working for people using FTV gen 1?

For me the apps don’t download or update since the play store has updated to the latest version. If I remove and reinstall an older version then the apps download fine but the play store updates itself in the background coming back to the same state.

I followed the instructions step by step carefully on my AFTV 1 rooted with OS version 5.0.5. I keep getting the follwing message “Error retrieving information from server. [RH-01]” when I launch the play store app. I removed and readded and redid the whole steps still the same.

Copy and paste a brief tutorial from this web ( http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-install-the-google-play-store-on-the-fire-tv-2-running-fire-os-5/ ) with the right corrections that it runs ok for me:

Install the Google Play Store on Fire TV 1 running Fire OS 5

    1. Install Xposed and HDXPosed onto your Fire TV. Follow instructions from link, but for Fire TV 1 updated to 5.0.5.1 the right package is this: (at this moment it´s the newest ) ( arm, not arm64 )
    http://dl-xda.xposed.info/framework/sdk22/arm/xposed-v86-sdk22-arm.zip
    2. Select ARM 5.1, (5.0.5.1 on my Fire TV 1) and pico from the options here and download Open Gapps.
    3. Install the open_gapps-arm-5.1-pico-#.zip file with TWRP recovery. Note that you do not unzip this file.
    4. Download the Google Play Store APK you wish to use. I suggest using this resigned 5.10.31-leanback version of the Google Play Store APK. See the “Before we begin…” section above for more info.
    5. Rename the Google Play Store APK you just downloaded to Phonesky.apk
    6. Boot your Fire TV to the HOME screen.
    7. Connect to your Fire TV via ADB.
    8. Send the Phonesky.apk file to your Fire TV’s /sdcard directory by running the command:
    adb push [PATH-TO-Phonesky.apk-ON-YOUR-PC] /sdcard/
(Note: Be sure to replace [PATH-TO-Phonesky.apk-ON-YOUR-PC] with the full path where you saved the file you renamed earlier.)
    9. Run the command: adb shell
    10. Run the command: su
    11. Run the command:
    mount -o remount,rw /system
    12. Run the command:
    rm -rf /system/priv-app/Phonesky/Phonesky.apk
    13. Run the command:
    cp /sdcard/Phonesky.apk /system/priv-app/Phonesky/
if this command show error ( in my case ), you can try with this other
    cp /data/media/0/Phonesky.apk /system/priv-app/Phonesky/
    14. Run the command:
    chmod 644 /system/priv-app/Phonesky/Phonesky.apk
    15. Run the command:
    rm -rf /sdcard/Phonesky.apk
    16. Run the command: exit
    17. Run the command: exit
    18. Disconnect ADB and restart the Fire TV.
    19. Once the Fire TV has rebooted, connect to it via ADB again.
    20. Run the command: adb shell
    21. Run the command: su
    22. Run the command:
    mount -o remount,ro /system
    23. Run the command: exit
    24. Run the command: exit

does this work with a fire tv stick?
i have kingo root so can i do this tutorial and get xposed working on a fire tv stick?
and if i do the tutorial to trick the play store into thinking the fire tv is a nexus 7 tablet will it work and will it show up on the play store device list on my PC so that i can install apps from the play store to my fire tv stick right from the play store on my PC

    • Gdroid666 says:

oh yeah i thought that you needed to flash a zip for xposed to work before installing the .apk, that is how it works on my amazon fire 7 tablet
i had to flash an xposed framwork zip and then install an .apk
so can someone explain why you do not need the zip to be flashed and how it works without it? is the zip only needed on some devices?

  79. Larry Westfall says:

    This has malware in it.

  80. Puia says:

Hi, thank you for the great tutorial.
Unfortunately the log in does not work for me. Whatever I try, it won’t let me log in – it is just loading and loading.

Does anyone else have the same problem? What can I do about it?
I use the new FireTV 3. Does it work for you with the FTV3?
