How to fix grayed out disabled apps on the Amazon Fire TV or Fire TV Stick

The latest Fire TV software update seems to have a bug that causes apps, specifically sideloaded apps, to be grayed out and disabled on the Fire TV home screen. Trying to access a gray app results in the message “This app is not associated with your Amazon account” appearing. It’s unclear why this is happening, but it likely has to do with changes the changes made to the apps row that allows Amazon Channels to appear. Thankfully, if you run into this issue, the fix is very simple.

To fix the issue, you should first try syncing Amazon content. This is done by going to the Fire TV’s Settings screen, scrolling all the way to the right, selecting “My Account,” and then selecting the “Sync Amazon Content” option. Most people experiencing the gray app issue say doing this was enough to fix the issue.

When an app developer uploads their app to the Amazon appstore, they have the option to enable DRM to protect their app from being pirated. The Fire TV checks to see if the apps you have installed have been purchased, whether for free or with money, using the Amazon account currently being used with the Fire TV. If there is no record of the Amazon account purchasing an app protected by DRM, the app will be grayed out. It seems as though the 5.2.6.3 software updated causes the account information to become out of sync for some people, which causes apps to incorrectly be disabled. Forcing a sync fixes the issue.

If forcing an account sync doesn’t fix the issue, you should try clearing the data and cache of the Appstore system app. This is done by going to the Fire TV’s Settings area, selecting “Applications,” selecting “Manage Installed Applications” at the bottom, selecting the “Appstore” app, and then selecting both the “Clear data” and “Clear cache” options. You should also select “Force stop” while you’re there to ensure the system app restarts from a fresh state.

When you go back to the Fire TV home screen you might see a blank apps row. Wait for it to reload. If several minutes have passed and your apps row hasn’t returned, or the apps are still grey, head back to settings and perform a sync once again. It’s also not a bad idea to restart your Fire TV after doing everything.

  1. I presume these apps could still be launched via the settings;manage-applications screen while they are grayed out? I’ve not yet experienced this.

They do, but you won’t know what you’re launching until they open….
There are no indicators showing what the greyed our app is.

I don’t seem to ever be in the fast ring to get updates, so I have no grayed out apps yet. Good to be prepared, though.

Glad I came across this post because I sent an email (via the help@aftvnews) about 4 weeks ago asking about this exact same problem. I’m thinking it occurred even before the latest OS update from Amazon. It occurs from time to time on both my 1st gen Fire TV Box & 2nd gen Fire TV Stick. It is resolved (for me) by not only syncing the Amazon Purchases but also by force stopping the Appstore, then clearing its cache & data. This only lasts for a few days however and then somehow I’m back to the same grayed-out logos.
I’m hoping it’s a software problem on the Amazon end and not something worse.
PS: as for the DroidAdmin app, I suspected that it would be problematic eventually, as well as the FireDL app which has also become a treasure-trove for the piracy market.
Stick to the DownLoader App and you’d be okay folks.
Thanks for all the work you do on this website, I really appreciate it.

I was having this issue and nothing from this page helped so I called amazon support. He has me do two things that worked.
1 – Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, Video, Clear Data
    2 – Settings, Device, Restart
I hopes that this helps. Good luck.

I have a jailbroken amazon firestick that worked fine a few months ago. I only ever used the Cinema app because I could never get the others to work and could find most of what I wanted there. Today I tried it and it says this app is not associated with your amazon account. I don’t know how to fix it and don’t want to get in trouble. When I click on it it gives me a blank page with a sad face. I also just got a new computer and am not sure this has anything to do with anything but I got a bluetooth mouse and noticed in the settings that both firesticks were listed but not connected and haven’t been able to connect either one. Not sure if I need to since I don’t need to watch on my computer, but not sure why they are even there or if they need to be connected. The firestick comes on and shows previews, but I can’t get the Cinema to work. Would someone please help me?

None of those things worked for me. I saw someone online say that if you go to settings, applications, manage applications, click on the app that you want ( it will show the picture of the icon) , then click launch application. That is the only way I can get the application that I want to watch.

    Amazon!

  23. Jeff says:

the only time i get apps listed they way they are supposed to be is by unplugging and plugging it back in. then they show up but only until i select the first one to view. going back to the home page i get grayed out apps again. nothing suggested in these postings has worked. might be time to move on to another system.

  24. Carmine says:

The solution that worked for me was to clear the cache for the specific affected app (under Manage Installed Applications).

Possibly not a permanent fix – exiting the app made the problem reoccur.
