Since Google TV devices have started playing video ads with no way to disable them, I thought it was a good time to remind people that it is possible to disable these kinds of ads on all Amazon Fire TVs, Fire TV Sticks, and Fire TV Smart TVs. These are the video ads that appear if you scroll up to the large ad banner at the top of the Fire TV home screen. Here are instructions for how to disable the video and/or audio from playing, which forces these ads to just be a static photo slideshow.
Quick Guide
Go to the Settings > Preferences > Featured Content menu on your Fire TV and set both autoplay options to Off if you want all video and audio ads to be disbled on the Home screen. If you prefer, you can set only the audio option to off to have the ads play silent video instead.
Detailed Guide
- Go to Settings on your Fire TV.
- Select the Preferences menu.
- Select the Featured Content menu.
- Set both options to OFF to disable all ads from autoplaying. If you prefer, you can set only the Audio option to OFF if you want to see the ads play without any sound, but know that there will not be any subtitles in that scenario. Setting only the Video option to Off is the same as setting both of them to Off, since audio will not play without the video playing.
Perhaps a question for a new topic: Is it possible to use a filtered DNS to block ads in Fire TV apps?
Yes. Download a DNS RESOLVER
– set it to Adguard in it’s settings. You’ll see where you can create your own settings to route your traffic through. Same way You can “test” your RESOLVER to see what/how many sites its sending your traffic through at the right hand top.
Go into settings and set it to turn on when you boot or reboot. (REBOOT, REBOOT, REBOOT – 1st rule w most any electronics you’re having problems with) You’ll have to use APPLINKED bc FILELINKED was busted for “contributing to piracy.” I’ll save you my thoughts on that.
Settings for the DNS RESOLVER using Adguard routing/settings:
176.103.130.130
176.103.130.131
A RESOLVER takes the place of ad-blocking apps which are much more often discovered by developers/apps.
Bear in mind they’re some of your newer apps that *will* catch a DNS RESOLVER too.
Over five years by referrals only I “program” Fire Sticks By Einstein (named aft my Beagle Basset hound)for people. I’m @ 174 FS’s & NOT ONE complaint other than newbies asking how to use them. A DNS RESOLVER is one of the slickest, simplest, best ways to rid your streaming devices of ads.
Been using it for years.
My thoughts are with the abundance of new/older apps if an app catches the DNS RESOLVER they’re just way, way too many more good apps to concern yourself with those apps that demand you delete your RESOLVER – even if it’s turned off. Pick another media app – you will still get/watch the same thing. I hope I have helped you.

Why do you need to download anything? What do you recommend & what advantage over changing DNS directly on fire stick as outlined here??

one thing i noticed recently with blocking video ads via adblocker/firewall is that amazon then stops giving me hd/1080p/4k streams… until i disable the blocking of certain domains.
Some enterprising person with a packet sniffer would be able to tell what kind of response it’s looking for and create a website we can redirect those addresses to.
Does this work with IMDB ads?
How do we remove even the banner images, not just the video auto play? I don’t want to see any suggested content over photos on the home page.
Hear, hear!!
Yes please!
That is what I want to know as well!

When I use adblock dns servers it causes my firetv stick to reboot randomly.
