Google announces new Home Mini and Home Max smart speakers

As was expected, Google has announced a new smaller version of their Google Home smart speaker, called the Home Mini, to compete with Amazon’s Echo Dot. Additionaly, Google announced a much larger higher-end smart speaker called the Home Max that more closely competes with the upcoming Apple HomePod speaker, than anything Amazon makes.

Google took to the stage today at their annual hardware event and announced a slew of new hardware which included new phones, laptops, headphones, and smart speakers. Unfortunately, there was no new Chromecast or Android TV hardware and the two platforms were hardly even mentioned.

As leaks suggestions, Google announced a new Google Home Mini smart speaker with Google’s voice assistant built in. Similar to the Google Home speaker introduced last year, the new smaller speaker is half covered in fabric, but this time the fabric is on the top half of the device. Under the fabric are 4 LEDs to indicate the device’s 2 far-field microphones have heard you.

The Home Mini will be available in three colors, “chalk,” “charcoal,” and “coral”. It is available to pre-order today for $49. It will be released on October 19th in the US, UK, Germany, Canada, France, Australia, and Japan.

Also announced is a considerably larger speaker called the Google Home Max. It houses a pair of stereo 4.5-inch woofers along with a pair of tweeters. Being a smart speaker, it too has far-field microphones for hands-free voice commands.

Much like Apple’s recently announced HomePod speaker, the Home Max can tune itself for the room it is in by listening to how sound bounces off of walls and objects. It supports Bluetooth and has a 3.5mm audio jack. The Home Max will be $399 when it is available in December and it comes with a 12-month subscription to YouTube Music.

Sorry but next to Amazons new product launch last week, these just look utterly lame and boring…
    I like the Exho Spot..
And the Echo Dot 2 looks much better then this Google speaker thing..

Apple has made its own hardware, Google has made ta own hardware, Amazon is getting Alexa into everything made by everyone else…
Ignoring phones and tablets that is..
Siri still sounds like a dormwntes robot. Not a patch on Alexa.

Home max the first google home to support alexa via aux in support and a dot

  3. Trololoooooo says:

Google Home Mini, by not having Audio Out, it is close to make me go with the Echo Dot.

Specially with that offer bundled with the Fire TV Stick 4K.

I know its functionality is going to be limited out of the USA with me being in Colombia, but it actually is more functional to me than a Google Home Mini without an Audio Out for listening to music

    • Tony Ramirez says:

I was set to get the Home Mini but no audio out is the killer. Notice they did not say anything about it even show a picture of the back.

  4. Competition is good for the consumer.
