As you’re probably already well aware, tomorrow July 15th is Prime Day. To celebrate their 20th birthday, Amazon is having a one-day shopping event which they promise will have “more deals than Black Friday.” Here’s information covering prices to expect, deal formats, and contests.
General Information
Sales begin at midnight Pacific in the wee hours of July 15th. Only Amazon Prime Members will be able to purchase discounted items. If you’re not a Prime Member, you can sign up for a 30 Free Trial at anytime and get in on the deals. Canceling a trial membership after placing a Prime Day order will not cause your order to be canceled or re-charged at the non-sale price.
Some items will go on sale at the start of the event and remain on sale for the entire day. However, you should expect most items to follow Amazon’s “Lightning Deal” format where the sale price starts at a specific time and ends when a set quantity has been purchased, or when a set amount of time has passed. If you’re not a Prime Member already, you may want to start your free trial now to ensure a deal doesn’t sell out while you’re busy signing up.
Fire TV Deals
We already know the Fire TV Stick will be available for $24 tomorrow. That will be the lowest price it has ever been since the initial $19 pre-order sale. The only other time the Fire TV Stick has ever been discounted was when it was $34 for a week last month. We don’t know if it will be an all-day sale or a more limited lightning sale. We also don’t know if there will be a limit to how many you can order. During previous Fire TV sales, the order limit has decreased throughout the day, so if you want to order more than one and are allowed to, it’s best not to wait until later in the day since the limit may change.
We don’t know if the Fire TV box will be discounted tomorrow. For reference, to help you gauge possible sale prices, the Fire TV has been reduced to $84 several times in the past. It was $79 for several days around Christmas, $74 during Black Friday, and the lowest it has ever been was $69 on Cyber Monday for only a few hours.
Update
7/15 @ 12:38am Since Prime Day has started and the Fire TV Stick is not on sale yet, we now know it will be a limited quantity “Lightning Sale” that will start at a specific unknown time. Also, both UK and German Amazon sites have the Fire TV box on sale in addition to the Stick, so it’s probable the Fire TV will also be on sale in the US today.
Here are all relevant Fire TV links, plus their lowest ever sale price, for reference:
Fire TV Apps and Amazon Coins
There hasn’t been any indication that Prime Day will offer a large free app bundle, like we’ve seen Amazon offer before. That doesn’t mean there won’t be individual free apps and heavily discounted apps. On Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Christmas Eve we saw apps and games discounted that had never before been on sale, so hopefully tomorrow will continue that trend.
Amazon Coins are the best way to buy Fire TV apps because 1 coin is equivalent to 1 cent when buying apps, but you can always buy coins for less than 1 cent each. We know that Amazon will be giving a 25% coin bonus tomorrow if you purchase 5,000 or 10,000 coins. If prices remain what they are today, that translates to 0.72 cents per coin. For the 5,000 coin pack, that will be the lowest price it has ever been. The previous lowest price was 0.80 cents per coin. The 10,000 coin pack was 0.70 cents per coin once in the past when Amazon offered it for $70 around Christmas. So the 5,000 coin pack will be the best bang for your buck tomorrow.
Contests
Amazon is holding several contests for Prime Day that are very simple to enter. The Photo Contest gives you a chance to win a $10,000 Amazon gift card, and all you have to do to enter is submit a photo depicting something fun or relaxing by tomorrow. The Transparent Contest gives you a chance to win a trip to Los Angeles for two, and all you have to do to enter is fill out a form tomorrow. The Music Contest gives you a chance to win up to a $25,000 Amazon gift card, and all you have to do to enter is play any Prime Music song tomorrow. The Personality Contest gives you a chance to win a $2,000 Amazon gift card, and all you have to do to enter is take an online quiz.
Tracking Deals
Check out the small Deal Preview that Amazon put out today and the partial list of electronics deals for a brief idea of some deals that are coming tomorrow. I’ll be posting deals on AFTVnews, Twitter, and Facebook all day tomorrow that I think the Fire TV community would be interested in, so check back often. I also have a deals-only RSS feed if that interests you.
Happy shopping!
