Fire TV software update 5.0.5 continues slow roll out

fire-tv-box-and-stick-update

It’s been over 2 weeks since software update 5.0.5 began rolling out to 1st and 2nd-gen Fire TVs and Fire TV Sticks. Judging by the comments I’m seeing, the majority of devices have yet to receive the update, making this one of the slowest deployments in the Fire TV’s history. I myself have only received the update on 2 out of the 10 or so Fire TVs and Fire TV Sticks in my testing pool. I’m still being notified daily by people who have newly received the update, so it appears Amazon has not put a hold on the update.

One possible explanation for the unusually slow release of software version 5.0.5 is that it’s the first update going out to all Fire TV models at once. Up until now, 1st and 2nd-gen devices have been on separate software branches which were released independent of each other. Even the two Fire TV Stick bundles, although only differing by their included remote, have had different software versions. The 5.0.5 update is the first one which converges all Fire TV devices into a single feature set, so perhaps Amazon is being extra cautious with this roll out since it affects every Fire TV owner at once.

Chime in in the comments below letting us all know when you receive/received the 5.0.5 software update and on which generation and type of Fire TV.

2 first gen fire tv’s and I’ve only received it on one. Haven’t had any issues with the one that has upgraded.

    • Kyle says:

I got the update on my first one 2 days ago, the 19th.
I bought a 2nd fire stick last night but it hasn’t gotten it. I wonder if there is a sequence they are following? This new one is extremely lagging and I wonder if it’s lack of update related?

  2. James says:

Has a 1st gen update been provided to Rbox yet? I will be waiting for his pre-root rom instrad of taking the OTA update on my fire tv. My stick is fine with OTA, but has yet to receive it.

    • Ray says:

Intrigued myself, might have a busy weekend ahead of me if it has :)

    • Jerry says:

Based on the podcast recorded on Friday, not yet. I think Elias is still waiting for one of his first gen FireTV to receive the update so he can capture and provide details to rBox… rBox’s hasn’t been updated either.

    • atone says:

Yeah don’t take OTA update on a rooted FTV 1st gen, or else you will probably lose the root forever. We have to wait patiently for Rbox’s pre-rooted rom (but first he needs the update to work with :)).

      • James says:

Yeah, that’s why I’m curious if he’s received the 1st gen update. If so, it’s likely he could get it done before many people get the OTA.

        • Y314K says:

Rooted 1st Gen FTV’s will probably download the update fine. But the CWM (CustomMod Recovery) should block the installation of it.

Until someone captures the 1st Gen FTV download link. And gets it to RBox. All we can do is wait….

          • Y314K says:

If you have blocked updates either on the Rooted FTV or router then you will have to worry even less.

    • AFTVnews says:

As of right now, no, Rbox doesn’t have the update yet. One of my 1st-gens tends to update before rbox’s, which is why I tend to be the one who gets it to him, but none of mine have updated yet.

  3. Brian says:

Got 1 of mine on my 2nd Gen Fire TV earlier this week (Maybe Monday or Tuesday), have not yet on my 1st Gen.

  4. Some One says:

Ah Ha! Another fine reason to root! Rooting allows you to install updates that haven’t been rolled out to you yet! Another reason for all the questioners about why to root.

  5. clocks says:

I got it on one gen 2 box about a week ago. The second gen 2 box still has not rec’d. It is odd how slow this is rolling out. Maybe Amazon has bandwidth caps to worry about. :-)

  6. Jeff_C says:

I received the 5.0.5 update on one of my First Gen Fire TV boxes on 9th Feb, still waiting for updates to my other First Gen Fire TV and original TV Stick with non-voice remote

    • Jeff_C says:

19th Feb and today my Fire TV Stick has updated to 5.0.5 There are no obvious benefits of this newer OS (particularly here in the UK – no Alexa for one thing). In fact it is so much slower to navigate now, and that is a shame. Anyone else notice this?

It shows the install date as 21st Jan 2016 when it actually installed 19th Feb – Weird.

After being prompted that I can mark apps as favourites following the update, how do I navigate to my favourite apps?

  7. Vonda Z says:

I have two 1st gen FireTVs and neither has received the update. I bought my parents a 1st gen FireTV and theirs updated.

  8. NoUpdateForMe says:

I have two 1st gen boxes and one stick that have not received the updates. I check daily. Bummer.

  9. iAYMANi says:

I have Two 1st gen and one Stick that have not Received the updates Until now.

    • Jeremy says:

I have two gen1 FTV boxes. I got it (5.05) today on one of my first gen boxes The other 1st gen box has not gotten it yet. Just keep waiting folks you should have it in two or three weeks at the latest. I’ve always been on the tail end of updates I’m just miffed, they still won’t let me install cbs all access. I think they are blocking it from installing until all 1st gen devices are updated not sure. anybody know how to get on there let me know.

  10. Jehri_R says:

I have 2 2nd Gen Fire TVs and they both received the update on 2/10/16.

  11. Matt says:

My in laws gen 1 has. Mine hasn’t as yet. Checking daily.

  12. Calvin Mickael says:

    Still 0/2. Checking daily.

  13. Michael says:

Got the 5.0.5 update on my 2nd Gen AFTV. Showed up last nite.

  14. David says:

Received my update and haven’t been able to push apps or apks anymore, maybe they caught on

  15. Josh says:

2nd gen fire TV got the update about a week ago. My two non voice remote sticks have not.

Thanks for the update, I was starting to think it was just me!

  16. Ulises A. Rodriguez, Ph.D. says:

1000 Thanks Elias to take into account my comments and suggestions that I sent you this morning!

I have two 1st Gen and two 2nd Gen Fire TVs. But only One of the 2nd Gen FireTV BOX already got the update.

Unfortunately, the other 3 are still waiting… So, I am Not sure how Amazon formulated the roll out.

As I mentioned in my last email that I sent you, I am fully sure that Amazon will update all the FireTV models to the 5.0.5, probably within the next  weeks, but what I really do not understand is why this update is taking so long to reach our 1st Gen FireTV?

I suggested that if it is possible, you contact it your “Anonymous” source on Amazon, just to know why this update 5.0.5 is being released so slowly?… I think many of us would appreciate it very much!

I think everyone here would like to know that today I have received a new v197 update, for the Wifi Remote Control of my FireTV 2nd Gen.

I have not noticed anything new or improved, but it would be good to know what’s new in this v197 upgrade for the wifi remote?

  17. Ali says:

Nothing yet, fire TV box 1st gen

  18. Ferruh says:

    Hi Folks,

In witch Country you all get the Update? Anyone here from Germany or UK?

    Thanx

  19. Hawkstead says:

I have a first gen fire TV stick. I got the update last Friday but now it won’t hold a network connection so I cannot watch anything. I’m up ship’s creek.
    I’m in New Hampshire, USA.

  20. MileHIGH303 says:

Both my Fire TV 1st Gen and Fire TV Stick have been updated to 5.0.5. – Denver, CO

    • Ulises A. Rodriguez, Ph.D. says:

You are located in the USA, in the UK or in Germany?

Do you has received the 5.0.5 update at the same time (same day), on your 1st Gen. FireTV Box and Stick?

  21. Rick says:

I just turned on my newest gen2 and it was updating,I have a gen 1 and another gen2 still to go.

  22. Thomas says:

Just got the update today on my Fire TV 2.

  23. john says:

My first gen Fire TV hasn’t updated yet. Since the gen 2 came out I have been having trouble with Netflix buffering on it and am hoping the update solves the issue. It’s the only app I’m having an issue with and both customer support and Netflix support were stumped. I watch Netflix on my laptop now with no issues.

Anyone else had any similar problems?

    • Jon says:

With Xfinity when I had buffering issue resetting my modem usually fixed it. I switched to Fios 2 weeks ago and haven’t had the issue since. I’ve been having issues with audio continuing but video not then the video does a fast forward to play catch up, but I had that with xfinity too.

      • john says:

Got my update yesterday on my gen1 Fire TV. Netflix now streams flawlessly. It looks like they were out in front of the update and their customer service and amazon customer service were totally unaware.

  24. Scott says:

Got 5.0.5 on a first-gen Fire TV and a second-gen Fire TV on 2/13. My first-gen firestick hasn’t yet upgraded.

  25. Dee says:

I have two FireTV stick (1st gen) and FireTV (2nd gen)still no update. Still patiently waiting but if I don’t get it this month then I expect it will update in March.

  26. Dee says:

^ Update on the previous comment. My first gen firetv stick and my 2nd gen firetv already got the update. Awesome!

  27. HeffeD says:

My 1st gen Fire TV has received the update, my 1st gen stick has not.

The update seems to work well, except for a few slight annoyances.

Netflix videos will start playing automatically, so as you first launch Netflix, you need to navigate away from the ‘feature’ that the app is advertising at the top of the queue, because it will start playing if you don’t…

The screensaver will now kick in if you have a YouTube video paused for too long. It didn’t used to do this. Not a big deal most of the time, but two or three times after exiting the screensaver, the video playback stutters until you restart the Fire TV.

If you have a Logitech Harmony remote, it isn’t recognized as a controller. If you launch an app, you’ll get an error message that says there isn’t a controller connected to your Fire TV. You can click on ‘Launch Anyway’, and the remote works just fine, you just need to click through that message every time you launch an app…

  28. TROJAN4EVR says:

Two fire tvs sticks(non voice) just updated last night. CA,USA

  29. afellow says:

My 1st gen Fire TV got the 5.0.5 update today (Germany).

  30. DimS says:

Just got the update today on my Fire TV

  31. Liam says:

Thanks for the updates on this site, I did think this is was an unusually slow update. I’m in UK and have not received the update on my 1st gen fire tv box. I’ve been checking manually for the past week or so.

If I didn’t know I wouldn’t have cared but I do and I’m trying my best to be patient. The only good thing from the very slow roll out is that they should be able to catch any bugs out before they hit everyone… I guess.

  32. Jon says:

I got the update on my Gen 1 Fire TV but on neither of my sticks. I was hoping the update would let me download the CBS All Access app (CBS is only reason I still have a DVR) but that wasn’t the case. Still says none of the devices can get it.

  33. Justin says:

I’ve been wondering about this. I still haven’t gotten the update and have been waiting for it though it now I realize I’m not exactly the only one.

  34. Mike4AU says:

In AL, second gen TV updated, but first gen Stick not updated.

  35. sky says:

I updated for gen 1 stick(5.0.5) has headphone blutooth. Yeah…

  36. Perry says:

It seems that many Fire TV Stick (1st gen) users have been able to update, and many have not. I keep checking if there is an update on mine, and it says there is none!! I am in NY. I have KODI and a few other side-loaded apps installed. Would this stop the update from working? Does that even make sense? I really want this update! Advice please!

    • tim says:

Hey Perry! If u have e.g kodi sideloaded, or other apps, this will not hinder the update from being installed.

It’s just that Amazon seems rolling the update in homeopathic doses.. It takes ages until all customers will have it… So just be patient. My second AFTV is still waiting too.

  37. tim says:

My 1st gen fire TV got the update yesterday. My 1st gen stick already last week.

From what I saw so far, I really like it. The GUI feels faster and just more smooth.

But what I love is, the update finally enables the new Plex-App (v2.4.30) !! I really like the new UI and it finally finally direct plays videos with AC3 audio !!! :))

  38. iAYMANi says:

I got the update on my sticks Fire TV Today, but on nothing of my Gen 1

  39. Joshua says:

My fire TV 1st gen updated yesterday.

  40. Traci Collins says:

Is there a place to go to download the 5.05 update to sideload into the 1st gen Fire TV and stick?

  41. Domerdel says:

I have AFTV (Gen1). Any idea if OS 5.0.5 will help Plex play DTS audio channels or am I going to have to rely on the XBMC guide still?

  42. Matt says:

I got the update on my gen 1 box yesterday. Alexa worked one time and hasn’t work since along with all voice search. Kodi got jacked up…no movie images in my library, I think the usb storage drive name might have changed. Will need to update my advancedsettings.XML if it has. The new plex app is nice. Kinda like the roku plex app.

  43. Sam says:

I’m getting the update now. After reading this, I manually checked and started downloading. I’m in the U.S.

  44. Behemoth says:

Just updated 1st gen. fire tv.Had problems with sling tv’s archived content freezing and restarting. This update has fixed the problem! Also, live sling seems to be smoother and resolution a tad better.Curious if this update has helped anyone else.

    • john says:

I am hoping that some of the apps are out in front of the update myself. In particular Netflix and now sling. Amazon doesn’t answer any questions about it when I call (they really seem not to know) but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the update will finally resolve the issue once and for all. Still haven’t been able to update my gen1 fire tv.

  45. Tel says:

Got my update for my gen 1 tv box!

The only issue I find is that the kodi backup add-on won’t write to the usb stick anymore (yes I have changed the directory, but the error still appears)

No other issues, Fire starter appears not to work but no longer not needed as kodi icon now appears in your app section, but i’m sure you knew that!

  46. Larix says:

Yesterday afternoon my Fire TV Stick got the Update to 5.0.5.
My Fire TV (1st Generation) doesn’t get it yet. (Germany)

  47. Aaron says:

Since updating I no longer get audio on Kodi :-(

  48. Liam says:

Fuxache.. I’m such an idiot, I thought the ‘storage too low’ warning came up on screen so I automatically clicked ‘not now’ as I get this all this all the time so it’s like a reflex now…

Anyway it was in fact the update message so I went to settings and clicked ‘check for system update’ but there’s nothing there. So now what? Do I have to wait for this message to appear again or what. Very annoying, this update process is just not very good and I hope they speed up next time.

  49. Lo says:

Finally got the update prompt after manually checking today and it kept giving me an update error. I uninstalled everything and still the same issue update error. I trying unpluging and same thing, now I tried to do a factory restore the update is just gone now. WTF amazon! I hate this stupid rollout process.

  50. Dean says:

I’m in the UK, and what a let down as the Alexa isn’t enabled here in Fire OS 5

Echo and Alexa have now been available in the US for quite some time now. When is Amazon going to start thinking about its customers outside the USA?

  51. sky says:

Has no sound in kodi with gen 1st fire tv( os 5.0.5), who are the same as me?

  52. Jonny says:

STILL waiting for a 1st generation update.

P.S. Did they fix the audio issue with Netflix?

  53. iAYMANi says:

anyone with a 1st-gen FireTV Stick on the Dev Preview received the update yet?

  54. Vpierre says:

Just got mine 30 minutes ago after factory resetting the Fire TV 1st Gen. I do not know if it had an affect on the update, but I did notice I was low on internal storage.

  55. Gareth Price says:

1st Gen Fire TV box updated to 5.05 last night (UK) All working fine, including Firestarter, other than Channel 5 catchup app ‘Demand 5’ needed updating to latest version ‘My 5’. Channel 4 catchup app ‘All 4’ still doesn’t work on 1 Gen boxes (needs Google Play Services), but the All 4 app page on Amazon UK says that a version for 1st Gen boxes will be released Q1 2016.

  56. iAYMANi says:

still waiting for a 1st Generation update.

  57. George says:

this has to be the slowest roll out in the history of updates.

  58. Dejan says:

I have problem with new update on 1st gen fire tv. Apps are not accessible on main screen and wukong remote is not working fine (you cant select nothing – mouse button don’t work)

  59. Alex d. says:

So my Fire TV Gen 1 recieve the update sometime before Sunday night when I noticed it. My parents 2 Fire TV G1 sticks (both purchased during the initial $19 prime special) received the the update before yesterday when I was over there an noticed. I don’t know if that helps but 3 G1 devices all with 5.0.5 now!

  60. AHC11 says:

Yesterday I randomly decided to reboot my gen 1 fire tv and when it came back up, there was an intro to the new OS. When I went to the system about screen the install date was January 20. Is it possible that the software is there for many of you guys and there just was no auto reboot in their updated package? For anyone who does not yet have the update, try a manual reboot and see if it helps.

  61. XT says:

My UK 1st gen stick is up to date now – the screen says since the 23th of February.
