There are already at least three easy ways to watch youtube on FTV.

I ordered yesterday, but am also tempted to cancel if I can decide in time. I felt pressure to place the order while on sale, but this box really isn’t what I was hoping for.

I love all new gadgets but I struggled here. I have the FireTV medallion as part of my home theatre, and I also have a great Harmony set-up, one that works OK with Alexa, and I have an Echo in the room. With all that, I just couldn’t justify buying the Cube.
While I do like the idea of having Echo-Show-like visual cards to augment Alexa, I did’t like the idea of an input-change on my TV when I asked Alexa for the weather.
How is the better than my separate ecodot and Fire tv 3? I have a harmony hub also
The UI is navigable hands-free by voice. (i.e., deeper voice/alexa integration) Having one device do it all simplifies things. It also means a single command will achieve things that would require multiple commands with Harmony handling power/AV and Echo handling app/content.
There will probably be more differences, but we won’t know until it ships.
Going by the technical specs, at a basic level, this is the medallion welded to a Dot with the same processing specs and 8 more gigs of storage and a “free” 10/100 Ethernet adapter.
I think if we are not interested in hands free control there is about zero difference in the Cube and the dongle with a separate Dot.
I wasn’t going to buy it, but it gave me the option of 5 monthly payments of $18.
I’m in California and clicked on link for $30 off. Took some investigating and found out it ended 11:59 Eastern Standard Time, 8:59pm in CA. Usually Amazon has the midnight deadline PST.
Darn – guess I will have to suffer with my 2nd Gen Fire TV until the next round. Only thing I find attrative about the cube is they went back to the bluetooth remote which I’ve found more reliable and responsive.
Afterthought – since they are upgrading the Fire TVs to support Amazon Music and visual effects,current AFTV Gen 1,2,3,stick owners might have most of the software upgrades – we’ll just use the remote. I see this as an advantage as it’s easier to cut alexa off with a “no” when you do alexa deals by pressing the mic button. Voice only, you have to wait for her to drone on about a product you might care less about.
I have supported AFTV for a long time and I still will but I need a serious Hardware upgrade. I own every interaction of the fire tv and this one I think I will have to skip. I just received a free Apple TV 4K as part of the Direct TV now promotion and it blows any aftv device out of the water. My Plex runs flawlessly, all the apps have a smoother interface and are more responsive. Love the remote and love the ease of voice search integration into all apps. If it were not so expensive I’d ditch aftv, but that’s never gunna happen so hopefully the next gen cube can be a true competitor with a nice hardware upgrade.
One advantage of watching Amazon Prime on an Apple TV is that you don’t get bombarded with ads all the time.
Maybe I have Stockholm Syndrome, but I still watch Prime video on my 2nd Gen Fire TV.
