The developer preview of Fire OS 5.0 has begun arriving on Fire TVs and Fire TV Sticks that signed up to receive the update. As expected, the interface and feature set appears to be identical to the current Fire OS 3.0 based software, but it’s under the hood where the changes are hiding. I have it installed on both a Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, so let me know in the comments if there’s anything you’d like me to check.
Can it output at 24 or 23.976 hz?
Yes, Fire OS 5 can do 24, 25, 30, 50, and 60 Hz. See here: http://www.aftvnews.com/fire-os-5-adds-partial-24p-25p-30p-video-support-to-the-amazon-fire-tv/
If you love Kodi, you’ll hate this update.
Firestarter can no longer observe the home buttons, so forget about launching Kodi with it. And LLama can no longer launch Kodi in place of another program (such as Ikono TV.)
The best you can do is set LLama to boot directly into Kodi. That works.
One would presume that FireStarter’s developer would update it to work with Fire OS 5, though, no?
I have kodi 14.2 just saw GRINDERS comment. Will llama update or will there be a workaround to use llama with a another app shortcut that launches kodi? Will google play store be available by default? if there are no visual differences. Can you list the under the hood differences?
I doubt it. Llama hasn’t been updated since last year. I haven’t been able to add a manual event that can trigger one app launching another. Maybe the dev behind Firestarter can come up with a fix from that angle. I hope so.
It almost seems like Amazon has gone after all the ways to conveniently load Kodi.
There is no Google Play store and I can’t see that ever being the case. It’s a competitor to Amazon. And only apps purchased through Amazon make it onto the Home Screen.
Grinders comment is very unsettling. Kodi is perhaps 75% of my fireTV usage. I may have to disable updates soon if that is the case.
I depend on firestarter HEAVILY, can this update be blocked once it becomes stable and released?
Without root, updates will have to be blocked through the router. Correct me if I’m wrong…
I tried to block through router and the firetv somehow could still check for update…?
You don’t need ROOT to block updates from the box itself. If you enable ADB debugging, you can connect to the Fire TV wirelessly from your computer and disable automatic updates.

Never mind. It seems you do need root. Sorry.
I Updated to the new FireOs 5 for the AFTV and now I will revert it back to OS 3.
It is NOT a stable build with all the following problems:
USB is not recognized, apks on usb show them not being found.
Applications, including Amazon services, don’t work properly and forces a OS install/reboot.
If anyone is having the following problems or fixes please post.
Does it still support Bluetooth headphone connectivity?
ADB connection from PC seems to connect but devices are offline ;(
Once this is fixed or a work around is found I will update my app ;)
Had the same issue with ADBFire 1.29. You need to install it fresh (delete old settings). Also try clicking the “refresh ADB” button.
He’s mucked this release up a bit.
Have you ever tried FireTV Launcher? It’s more like a folder for installed apps regardless from amazon store or side load. It works like charm for both root or non-root. FireTV Launcher is displayed on RECENT. Double clicked on FireTV Launcher will show all installed apps.
It says that FireTV Launcher is not compatible with my Gen 1 Fire TV. Is this only for OS 5 devices?
FireTV Launcher is an app. It’s not FREE but worth every penny. I bought it and have been using it for months. Here is the link http://www.amazon.com/AltusApps-FiredTV-Launcher/dp/B00PQWDDQK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1440098639&sr=8-1&keywords=FireTV+Launcher
Has anyone tried sideloading the CinenaNow app from Android TV to see how well it works?
Vpn seems to work on aftv
