Existing Amazon Fire TV Cube owners get 50% off the new Alexa Voice Remote

The new Fire TV Alexa Voice Remote announced yesterday, with its added power, volume, and mute buttons, is something that Fire TV customers have been asking for ever since the original Fire TV debuted in 2014. While those who purchase the Amazon Fire TV Cube now will get the new remote included at no extra charge, existing Fire TV Cube customers aren’t entirely out of luck because Amazon is offering all existing Fire TV Cube owners a 50% discount on the new Alexa Voice Remote, bring the price down to just $14.99.

All Fire TV Cube owners who registered their devices before October 2 qualify for the 50% discount on the new Alexa Voice Remote. All such customers should have received an email with a discount code that can be used to take 50% off when purchasing the new remote. If you’ve opted out of Amazon marketing emails, which I suspect most of you probably have, you won’t receive the offer email. In that case, you’ll need to contact Amazon customer service to buy the new remote for half off. If you’ve already pre-ordered the new remote, there’s no need to cancel your order. Just contact customer service and they’ll apply the discount.

The discount code in the email being sent out only allows you to buy one new remote at the discounted price. If you’ve purchased and registered multiple Fire TV Cubes and want to buy the new remote for each, you can receive a 50% discount on each remote but you’ll need to contact Amazon customer service to do so. The 50% discount is available for existing Fire TV Cube to take advantage of through the end of the year.

During the last couple of months, the Fire TV Cube with the old remote has been on sale for $89.99, $79.99, and even as low as $69.99 for qualifying customers. Customers who purchased the Fire TV Cube during any of these recent sales have no reason to be upset about the remote swap because, even after factoring in the cost of the separate new remote, they still paid far less than the $119.99 cost of the new Fire TV Cube bundle that includes the new remote. For those who paid full price for the Fire TV Cube and want the new remote, at least you’ll now have a backup voice remote that only cost you $15, which is less than the old voice remote has ever been. Lastly, two remotes can be used simultaneously on any Fire TV model.

Update

If the customer service representative you’re speaking with is unaware of this offer, end the conversation and try again later. I personally initially selected “Device” as the reason for contacting customer service and the representative was unaware of the offer. I then immediately started another chat but selected “An order I placed” for the reason and was quickly given credit to use towards the purchase of the new remote.

Amazon is saying they don’t know what the H E double hockey sticks I’m talking about. They said “If it is not on OUR site, it is not real”.

  2. Shawn Roth says:

I was told I couldn’t contact them until after the new remote was on sale, not while it is on pre-order.

    • Mauricio says:

Same. They said to order it and that they would charge me the $30 but to contact after I got to get it discounted. Not interested in taking that chance.

  3. Ryan says:

I am being told it is Spam too.

  4. Travis G says:

Just tried this and it worked – though the rep gave me a $15 “courtesy credit” rather than a discount code.

  5. Shawn says:

I just called customer service and was authorized a $30 credit and proceeded to place a preorder on my computer while customer service was on the phone w/me. They set up the promo discount so when I went to check out price showed $0.00. Happy Amazon is doing damage control on this one for those of us who purchased Cube prior. Hopefully others experience better customer service than as previously noted by others.

    • id10t says:

Same here and got the email from Amazon to pre-order. It was 29.99 until I got to the cart and then it applied a 29.99 credit to 0.00 dollars.

When I spoke with the rep earlier I was under the impression I could not order it until they shipped and they would be sending out a email to let me know.

So I expect I will be getting one when they ship on the 31st.

  6. Dennis says:

I just tried a minute ago with no luck!

  7. Gregg says:

I bought my Cube a little over a week ago. No email. I’ll hold for a bit before the excruciating process of calling customer service. Thanks for the heads up.

    • Gregg says:

Quick update. I did the text chat on the app with customer service. They gave me $30 credit! Also I’m no longer a Prime Member, so don’t let them use that as an excuse.

      • Gregg says:

Also, I bought it from Best Buy (and they asked), but they still gave me $30 clams for the remote pre-order. If you guys want a screenshot of the chat for the article, let me know.

  8. chris wilson says:

Just wanted to chime in. Amazon gave me a thirty dollar promo. Applied to the preorder. Took about 5 minutes. It is painless.

  9. Carlos says:

Amazon told me not to trust AFTV, lol.

Rohan Kumar: I am sorry, I see that the above link is not from Amazon.
So please do not trust them until and unless you find that promo on Amazon website.

  10. BobR says:

Thanks for the info and confirmation. Seems like a fair deal for a standalone improvement in a remote a few months after purchase. However given the specs of the new 4k stick, am I throwing good money after bad? I don’t believe that the street price for the updated remote + Cube will be above $90 given that the 4k stick is $50 and has some better features

  11. CLAMSLAM says:

I also just tried and was told that they can’t honor because it was not advertised on their site. I hope it changes. I would purchase a few if so.

  12. Mauricio says:

Just tried and was given a different excuse but they would not honor this. Please make sure to verify and/or update posts with the problems people are having.

  13. Tom Brock says:

I just now got an email for a FREE one. I went through check out and sure enough, it was free,,,

  14. Scott Lewis says:

So many different stories. Hopefully they get customer service on the same page. For my money I sent an email and about an hour later got an email from Amazon entitled ‘Have a New Alexa Voice Remote on Us‘. So not quite 50% off, just free. And if I buy a second remote for my second cube, then effectively 50% off. So I’m happy.

  15. RDH says:

From the experience i just had Depending on the rep you get you’ll either get three options. On the chat app they offered the remote for $15.99 i declined they advised if im in the return window initate a return and get the new one when it ships on the 29th . This took about 23 minutes on the app as well, i was transferred to different people on a they have a special “chat team.”

    I decided to call
Explained the situation the rep said she can apply a 30 credit to my account now and pre order it for me, or she’ll just leave the credit on the account and i can order on release date. I just did the preorder. Took 5 minutes.

  16. CLAMSLAM says:

So update.. after chatting with amazon agent and being told they don’t honor because it was from a different site then Amazon.com I receive an email from them stating they were wrong and that in fact they will be selling half off and to expect email in the next few days with coupon code. I hope I can buy more than one half off as I have a ton of amazon devices.

  17. BobR says:

Had purchased 2 cubes previously and received 1 email for 1 free Remote. Clicked the link, and it’s now on pre-order for free. Well done Amazon!! I haven’t decided when to purchase the 2nd remote for the remaining Cube.

  18. Jason says:

I chatted with customer service through the app and told them it’s frustrating to have the cube ship with an upgraded remote after only being on sale for three months. They have me a $29.99 “courtesy” credit on my account.

  19. Ice says:

Was told to wait until I received an email within the new few days. If I don’t get an email, then contact them and they will manually give me 50% off.

  20. Brian says:

I got the email yesterday with subject: Introducing Fire TV Stick 4K. It had the link to 50% off for the preorder. I clicked and it took off the 50% at checkout.

    • Brian says:

To be clear, right below the fire TV stick 4k ad in the email was the add for 50% off the new remote.

      • Scott Lewis says:

Apparently not everyone got the same email. I just went in my trash and found the email with the same subject as yours. Right under the fire stick was a regular ad to preorder the remote and regular price.

  21. Nick says:

So I saw all of this, and while super excited at first and a little less excited after reading a lot of people had problems, I decided to take the chat approach. I counted 4 times being passed around to different agents.. finally ending up at the AFTV Cube Team member who knew nothing about it.. check out the website link for screen shots of my conversation.. he’s supposed to contact me if he finds out anything new about it.. we’ll see!

  22. Stan LaMuth says:

I just got an email from the CS Rep I spoke with yesterday who had told me they wouldn’t give me a break on the new remote . Tonight they issued me a $15 credit in my account. Just preordered the remote and the credit applied .

Glad they did this but it still sounds like there is no uniform method for handling these inquiries

  23. Jay says:

I chatted them and they gave me $20 courtesy credit on my account and right after I got done chatting with them I also got the 50% off email.

  24. Dave Arthur says:

I sent an email to Amazon customer service referencing this article on aftvnews and requesting credit for 2 remotes. I got a reply back within 4 hours along with a $30 credit.

  25. Michael says:

I don’t know about other countries, but at least in “Germany” (Deutschland, Amazon.de) it is always the best choice to talk to Amazon on the phone. E-Mails are usually processed abroad and often times I get the notion that their staff just lacks the language skills to really understand what I need, esp. when it is a little more complicated.

  26. Todd says:

I received the email from Amazon it was titled “Introducing Fire TV Stick 4K”. Second Picture down was a link stating “50% of exclusively for you. Click to redeem” When I clicked on the link it directed me to the Remote purchase page and on checkout it applied the $15.00 discount.

  27. Nick McDonald says:

I posted about my experiences last night, but I guess my experience was not allowed to be posted for some reason. At that time, I had chatted with Amazon and got transferred to 4 different people from out side the US that had no idea what I was talking about only to be told they would let me know if they find anything out about it. Today I read more of your comments and decided to call as well. I called 3 times before 8am EST and got someone with an accent and decided to wait. At 8:10am I called and got someone who’s 1st spoken language was English. She immediately helped me and was able to apply a $30 discount to my account and I have just processed a pre-order for the remote at no cost to me. I’m excited to get one!

  28. Adam O'Donnell says:

I just got my credit this morning. I went the chat route – even though phone usually gives better results, but I wanted to do this in the background while I was working. It took me 20-30 minutes because they kept passing me from one person to another. But I didn’t really have to do anything. Eventually I got to a person who said they would be sending emails in batches and not everyone will have received it yet. But they were giving me a promotional $15 credit. I was fine with that so took my cash and said thank you. :)

  29. Carter S. Johnson says:

I was transferred to no less than 5 different CS reps, then apparently their system timed out. Spent a half an hour on this goose chase. No luck.

  30. Eric S says:

I used chat function and selected my FireTV cube and remote as my concern. I was blunt but it worked and I received the full $30. See below:

Initial Question: Hello, I recently heard about the new FireTV remote. I purchased a FireTV Cube a couple months ago (I have another FireTV, I should mention). There was a promotional email that was sent offering a steep discount on the new remote for those who purchased the Cube previously. I did not receive this email but believe I qualify (just have the promotion emails turned off). Given that I have been a loyal customer, I would like to request a $30 credit so I can purchase the new remote. Thanks.

    • Llyod says:

I literally cut and pasted what you wrote in a chat window, After being passed around to three different csr’s I was offered a $15 courtesy credit.

  31. Benwish says:

Painless and quick chat from my cube order. Mentioned the missing discount email and had the remote in my checkout. Right away he applied a 29.99 courtasy credit. Net cost for me 0.00 $ . Sweet.

  32. Flokic says:

The 50% off email discount expires 31st of December, correct? First time I’ve got one of these and I’m wondering if I can use it on black friday/cyber monday or on top of some other promotion that the remote might get?

  33. patrick says:

If you are okay with it, I can manually add the discount on your account?

Thank you for choosing Amazon. Have a great rest of the day!

  34. David Flannery says:

I went the chat route, with topic being my Fire TV Cube order. It took a half hour, two transfers, and standing firm (about knowing others had got $30 credit) until the last agent “talked to my manager” and I finally got the $30 courtesy credit. I immediately pre-ordered the remote and the credit showed up so cost was zero.

  35. Bertini Joinvil says:

Called amazon about “an order that I placed” and sure enough I got a 50 percent off the new remote.

  36. badbob001 says:

I just chatted with Amazon and asked about the $30 credit for existing customers. Response is that I can either get $15 credit for a future order or 50% off the total of an existing order. I quickly ordered three remotes, provided the order number, and got 50% off the entire order. Sweet.

  37. Adam O'Donnell says:

Anybody having issues with the remote? I’ve tried two different Fire TV2 boxes and same result on both: pairs and controls FTV for 5 minutes or less and then shows as “offline”. Volume never works at all.

    • Nick says:

YES! I just got home yesterday from vacation and went to use my new remote. I set it up, played around with it and worked great on my aftv2. Set it down for 10 mins, took care of something then came back to watch tv. My remove wouldn’t work at all. So I re-paired it, and it again worked for 5 mins.. then would not work unless I deleted it and paired it again. I haven’t even bothered to figure out how to work my tv’s volume/input yet. I can’t get the aftv to work. What gives? I was hoping to come on and find someone had posted a new article about complications and how to resolve them. help!

      • Adam O'Donnell says:

I’ve seen no mentions of this anywhere. But I did see some comments on the Amazon page about other troubles with the remote. Seeing as I paid $30 for the remote and for $35 I can get the whole 4K stick and remote on Black Friday, I am sending back the remote and I’ll just buy new sticks for all my TVs. 4 new sticks is a pretty cheap investment and all reports indicate that it’s at least as powerful as the AFTV2 or anything else. Maybe I can get a few bucks on eBay for my AFTV2 boxes.

        • Nick says:

They are supposed to be pretty valuable because of their compatibility, root-ability and acceptance of things like external storage etc. That’s not a bad idea, maybe I will as well because honestly I pretty just use mine in the cable cutting sense, which so far has had little use of rooting and I pretty much only stream.

          • Adam O'Donnell says:

Same here. I mean I have KODI and a few other things on there, but nothing that can’t go on a new stick. I don’t have the need to root or attach external storage. Looks like less than a couple of weeks until Amazon’s sale so I’ll just hold out until then.
