Existing Amazon Echo and Echo Dots to receive Spatial Perception software update

Along with the all-new second generation Echo Dot, Amazon announced a new feture called Echo Spatial Perception (ESP) that will ship on the new Echo Dot and be arriving via a software update to existing Amazon Echo and first generation Echo Dots soon. When multiple Echos or Echo Dots are within earshot, ESP allows Alexa to respond intelligently from only the device that’s closest to you. With Amazon positioning the Echo Dot as a device for every room, and even selling them in 6 and 12 packs at a discount, this is a much needed feature to prevent multiple instances of Alexa responding at once, or worse, executing a sensitive request, like placing an order, more than once. An exact date for the release of the software update for existing devices has not been announced, but you can expect it to arrive this fall.

I wonder if they’ll make it so I can tell the Kitchen Dot to tell the Livingroom Dot to play music via the attached speakers? If that happens it will be a home run for me.

Right know the voice recognition is getting worse and not better. When I am running the kitchen exhaust hood, it can never hear me correctly. I find I have to very clearly enunciate and be very close the microphone in that situation.

That would be great, I’d love to be able to tell my Living Room “Alexa” to play another lullaby on my upstairs Bedroom “Alexa” to put my son back to sleep. :) Right now I can only do that with my phone and the Alexa App.

This ESP will be great though, because every night when I put my son to sleep and ask “Alexa” to play a lullaby my Living Room “Alexa” also hears me and plays some random music (she can’t quite hear me so she just “plays”).

This is great! This just made me cancel my single echo dot order and replace it with another one with 2 Echo dots. :)

Wish I could use the echos as an intercom system. That would be a killer app.

Definitely wish we could use them for intercoms.

“Alexa open com to kitchen” and then have it be full duplex connnection between kitchen and bedroom.

I simply named one of my Echos “Alexa” and the other “Echo.” But once they get the spatial update, I’ll call them BOTH “Alexa” again.

  5. Genie now has ESP feature
