ES File Explorer officially released for the Amazon Fire TV

es-file-explorer-header
ES File Explorer is one of the most popular and most powerful Android file explorers. Today it has officially been added to the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick appstore. ES File Explorer is one of the most feature rich file browsers available for Android and has been one of the most popular apps to sideload onto the Fire TV from day one. It’s great to see it officially come to Fire TV devices.

This is mostly the same app that many of you have been sideloading. The interface has been polished a bit to work with the Fire TV, but you’ll still be moving a highlight box around the screen to interact with the app. The power of ES File Explorer comes not from what it can do with files on your Fire TV, but what it can do with remotely accessible files. You can access or download files from any number of sources like Dropbox, Google Drive, FTP servers, your home network, and so much more. The app even has a built in web browser, music player, video player, and more. Look forward to posts from me in the near future showing off different things you can do with ES File Explorer.

Update

9/27/2015 A guide using ES File Explorer to sideload using nothing but the Fire TV is now up.

7/30/2016 ES File Explorer has been removed from the Fire TV appstore.

8/2/2016 ES File Explorer has returned to the Fire TV appstore.

I’ll see if there’s a newer version than the one I updated to last week, but my issue with this version is not being able to select the login fields to authorize access to my box.com account. It is nice having the app in my carousel

  2. Grinder says:

It does work with the remote, but what a clunker of an app.

  3. stephen says:

The updated version of esfile explorer is very difficult to navigate, I like the older version better, I think the new version is only good for touch screen devices

Download the Holo “theme” from the app store and install it. No idea if Google Play theme APKs work with the Amazon Store installs, though.

    • TheUnchosenOne says:

I concur…. The sideloaded version seemed to generally work as intended. This version is very clunky, and for whatever reason I keep losing the cursor after selecting something. I still have the APK for a version that I know worked, I may disable updates and re-install that version.

    • Alan says:

Can u please tell me what older version your referring to. Thanks

You can find Fire TV and install/uninstall/start app or manage files on it

When are we going to get a full featured browser made of Fire TV?

    • RgnKjnVA says:

      +1

I would like to be able to stream sports from NFL Game Pass, MLB.tv, NHL Gamecenter and NBA League Pass directly on AFTV so I don’t have to run an hdmi cable to my media hub.

  6. natebetween says:

    Hmm…

From the Amazon store I can install it to 2 of my 3 AFTVs. When I log in to the 3rd one, I see it’s still registered to my account. I also verified that under my Amazon account. However, I don’t see it to install directly from Amazon. When I do a search of “ES File” or “File Explorer”, nothing comes up. The box says I have the latest version: “51.1.6.3”. Is this box behind in it’s updates?

  9. Ivy Z says:

I cannot download FireStarter apk. After entering the web address as follows: https://github.com/sphinx02/FireStarter/releases and click next, it does not allow me to type in a name for this apk.

  10. Hurlimann says:

I want to delete an add-on (a Kodi skin) from my Amazon Fire TV Stick.
I read that I could do this using ES File Explorer. So I downloaded the apk and installed it on the AFTV stick. (I didn’t know there was another way to do this.)
It runs fine and lets me use the AFTV remote to navigate to the add-ons folder where the problematic skin is installed.
However, unlike ES explorer on my Adroid phone, it presents no mechanism (icon) for deleting the selected folder.
Is it restricted in some way on the AFTV Stick or am I missing something obvious?

    • ks says:

Yeah I downloaded some stuff I want to delete from the sidebar also does anybody know how to do that? Do I have to uninstall some zip files?

In applications Colle app usage data off. Search for es explorer find it click on it but it won’t download. In Canada registered in the USA address usa credit card usa phone number.

  13. Alex says:

i have a problem i accidentally skipped past the re sizing screen to adjust to my tv and now my screen is disappearing at the edges.
how do you go back to this option to resize please?

  14. shoom says:

This is not an update as the lastest version of ES will not let you install apk files direct from the kodi site. Dont waste your time use this new guide to install the firestarter zip file via ES which will then install kodi for you.

  15. Chad says:

Does anyone know how to install Google Chrome on Amazon Fire Stick using es file explorer…?

  16. Alan Hall says:

I have a Westinghouse smart TV using an Amizon fire stick.
I was following instructions to install Kodi. I downloaded ES file explorer. I clicked on the ” open ) tab. I noticed the version update says March 8, 2009. The instructions show an update version of “July 31, 2015”. How do I update my version? I have stopped at this point.

  18. D. Orosz says:

ES File Explorer is seriously hard to navigate. I think the 3 Stooges must have designed this worthless clunker of an app.

  19. Nickle says:

I just purchased a new fire stick and trying to download es files mines says get instead of download I thought it was free

    • Tod says:

All the tutorials I have watched show it as free. I have run into the same problem. If I find a fix I’ll let you know.

  20. Tod says:

I can’t get the ES File Explorer on my AFTS. Each time I get to the ES File icon and clic on it I only see a “get” button. No download. No free button. Why is this happening? All the tutorials I’ve watched showed either a download button or a get button. Not mine though.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks
    Rod

    • Ray FAm says:

For those who see “get” instead of “free or download” for ES Explorer, just click on “get” It may show a pop up asking for billing address via your amazon account. If you have not registered your fire stick with your amazon account do so. If you have then just go out of the screen back to home, search for ES Explorer again and click “get” It should tell say you have already purchased it and the download will begin shortly. At that point it will begin the download and install.

  21. Ajmay says:

I try to open bookmarks via es explorer, Facebook, Amazon etc.
    It closes explorer every time.

  22. Frank says:

Hi. Any chance you can add a colour to the cursor to get over the contrast problem when using Fire Stick remote.
    Ta!

  23. P says:

It is impossible to delete downloads from Es explorer or old versions of kodi, there must be a simple delete option somewhere is there????

  24. Oleana cannizzaro says:

I’m trying to download the es explorer but instead of saying download it says get.

  25. Brandy says:

I purchased a new fire stick today. I have been trying and trying to download this to my fire stick. After getting extremely frustrated with the repeated failure of the attempted download (i can’t even find it despite following all the directions), i contacted amazon. They said the ES file Explorer isn’t compatible with the fire stick. AM I MISSING SOMETHING?????

  26. Oak says:

Im having the same problem Brandy. Tried to “push it” from amazon site & its not compatible with my new stick. Is there another way to download KODI anyone?

  27. Becky says:

Ive just bought another stick, is there another app i can download like es file explorer on to the stick so i can add dropbox? Kodi is backed up on a drop box account.

  28. Michael Michalko says:

Amazon giveth, and Amazon taketh away. I guess too many people were finding out how useful the sticks could be with a proper download platform. The only way I can see getting around this is sideloading the APK. http://goo.gl/pHGvi8 It’s a pain, but once you do it, you won’t need to sideload any more.

  29. Lana says:

How do I close out of browser windows within the ES app? I can’t open anymore and I’m struggling right now!

  30. Dan says:

Help – each time I create a favorite in ES explorer – I add it and can see it at the bottom on the list but when I click on them rather than invoking the he URL I get the message “invalid path” then nothing????!

Got this for kodi and other apps

  31. Darshan Parikh says:
