Ecobee has officially announced the ecobee4 smart thermostat with built-in full Alexa capabilities. To be clear, this isn’t just a smart thermostat that can be controlled by Alexa, but rather, it’s like having an Echo Dot attached to your wall that happens to also directly control your home AC and heater in a smart way. The ecobee4 has a microphone, speaker, and lightbar to facilitate Alexa communication, as well as a touchscreen and smartphone app for its standard thermostat interface.
Like its predecessors, the ecobee4 comes with a wireless temperature sensor so it can in a specific room, as opposed to just at the unit itself, like all other thermostats. You can add up to 32 additional sensors if you want more rooms monitored.
The ecobee4 has multiple embedded microphones for hands-free far-field voice recognition. You can talk to Alexa through it, just like you can an Amazon Echo or Echo Dot. There is a rear facing speaker to hear back Alexa’s responses. While it can do everything an Echo can do, you’re probably not going to want to play music out of it. It’ll best for hearing your daily news brief, the weather, answers to questions, and other spoken responses.
The ecobee thermostat already had one over on its biggest competitor, the Nest thermostat, with its remote sensors and touch screen, but now with Alexa built-in, it easily stands out as the top smart thermostat. You can pre-order one today for $249. The ecobee4 will be released later this month on May 15.
Do these Thermostats support High Voltage / Baseboard heating?
They work with 24V/3A systems but higher voltage would require a 24V relay coil between the thermostat and the heater.
