The upcoming Amazon Echo with a touchscreen, which I leaked the first image of last week, might be announced as early as tomorrow, according to The Wall Street Journal. Sources tell the Journal that the built-in camera will, as I speculated, be used for a video calling feature similar to Skype.
The new device is said to be “priced at more than $200.” I expect, and have been hearing, the same in regards to the price. Although, I confidently expect it to be less than $250.
The Journal’s sources say the rumored calling capabilities, which are expected to also come to existing Amazon Echo and Echo Dot models, will be released in stages. The first stage could be “as an intercom within the house between Echo devices, or between Echo owners.” I’d expect future stages to allow calls between Echos and regular phone numbers.
While The Wall Street Journal’s sources are often fairly accurate, given the nature of how and where I found the first images of the new Echo model, I have my doubts that it will be announced tomorrow. We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, the regular Echo just went on sale for $149.99 for those of you not interested in camera’s and touchscreens with your voice assistants.
