My Downloader app for the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick has been purchased (for free) by over 300,000 people since I released it in November. The app currently has a 4.6 out of 5 star rating from nearly 500 reviewers, so despite it being so rudimentary, it seems to have filled a need that many Fire TV owners have, which is a simple way to download and install APK files. At this time, Downloader sits as the 15th most popular free app in the entire Amazon Appstore. I haven’t had time to add additional features to the app, so I’d like to hire an Android developer. If you’re an Android developer, with free time on your hands, that wants to make a bit of extra money, please read on.
I’d like to hire an experienced Android developer to add a few features to my Downloader app. Since the app, and the features I want added, are so rudimentary, the main qualifications I’m looking for are speed, efficiency, and quality. I can add the features I want myself, but being new to Android development, it would probably take me 10 times as long as an experienced Android developer and be buggy. If you can take a detailed set of plans, and have the skill and time to code up a simple Android app in a few days, then please email me to discuss specifics. Of course, I will pay you for your work and for possible future ongoing updates.
To give you an idea of the work needed, I’d like to add a basic file browser that lists files downloaded by the app and allows the user to delete them or re-trigger the installation. I’d also like to add a history page showing a list of URLs entered in the past. There are a few more features I want to add, but nothing too complicated.

Maybe you should have the top 10 URL used by Downloader
While that would indeed make the app more user friendly as “typing” the URL using the on-screen keyboard is extremely tedious especially for those with FTV Stick without any keyboard attached it would put the Downloader app into risk being classified as “pirate” app due to the links embedded. Currently is a “neutral” tool without any specific / promoted purpose and as such most likely to survive any future scrutiny from the Amazon side. Let’s keep it this way I’d say.
Instead I’d suggest to incorporate / add the configuration option which will allow user to point to a simple txt file via short URL (maybe also with support of Dropbox, One Drive and so on)containing his or her own (and easily editable) list of URLs which the app will load and display upon start-up or via built in option. This way the app itself will remain neutral and everybody can use either their own “private” URL lists or some community build ones as well – totally separate from the app itself.

If you email me the URL that you’ve entered that doesn’t result in your app getting installed, I’ll add it to my list of things to debug.
Basically, the app only works with plain HTTP downloads, so if you give it a URL that isn’t a direct link to a file sitting on a server, it will likely fail. Most file hosts and APK mirror sites don’t have direct download links because they want to serve you ads before giving you the file.
So http works but not https?
No, both http and https work. What I mean is on some sites, when you click a download link, it doesn’t point to a file. Instead, it points to a webpage that then automatically starts the download once it loads. Those links don’t work with my Downloader app. Those websites do that so you are forced to load an ad before downloading anything.

I definitely considered open sourcing the app, but that wouldn’t solve my main issue, which is a shortage of time. I’ve never started or managed an open source project, so I would need to devote time into figuring it all out. Hiring a developer to add the few additional features I want seems to be the path that uses the least amount of my time. Down the line, if I have the time, I definitely plan to look into open sourcing it.
