💬  Plex becomes a streaming aggregator with new Universal Search, Watchlist, and Discover features
  1. Dan W says:

The reason why device manufacturers like Google, Amazon, Roku, and Apple can't create the "holy grail of a system aggregator" is because streaming services don't want them to and device manufacturers can't piss them off or they will pull their app. Every streaming service that has content show up in the device's interface/search has voluntarily submitted its content catalog to the device manufacturer. Device manufacturers cannot choose, on their own, to show you content from a streaming service without the streaming service's okay. Streaming services want you browsing in their own app because that's the best way for them to keep you watching something from them. If a device manufacturer goes too far with its own interface/search to keep people out of a streaming service's app, then the streaming service will pull its app from the device.Netflix is the biggest example of this, because it has the most leverage as the most popular streaming service. It took years for Netflix content to finally appear in the Fire TV's universal search, not because Amazon didn't add it, but because Netflix refused to allow it. Google TV and Apple TV still can't show Netflix content in their aggregator interfaces. Fire TV can do it because it created a way for the app itself can choose to display a recommendation row in the Fire TV interface. This is why 3rd-party apps like Reelgood, JustWatch, and Plex can step up and aggregate content from anywhere. They don't need to play nice with other streaming services because they have nothing to lose.
Had sideloaded v9.1 this onto several Fire TVs and it was working *reasonably* well in terms of linking through to streaming content. The actually released version 9.2, at least in the UK, has completely disabled the linking though to content, you can't even fire up the appropriate app.Looks like Amazon have an issue with Plex doing this that they didn't with Reelgood, JustWatch etc - perhaps just a question of popularity of the app.

💬  Toshiba’s newest flagship Fire TV Smart TV just dropped to the new lowest price it has ever been
  1. Mark says:

I was just looking for comments good or bad on this TV and could not find any. But I have a question I recently bought(4weeks ago)the new named insignia fire edition TV/smart TV F-50 series and I'm already having little problems probably a glitch so what I want to know is does anybody have the new f50 series and are they having any problems also if someone has the f50 series and the Toshiba fire TV that's talked about in this article can you tell me what you think is the better of the two? Or if someone has owned and Insignia fire TV and went to Toshiba can you tell me a little bit about it and if it's better than the insignia because I'm already thinking of returning it the storage on this f-50 series is pretty good for me anyway since I don't use a whole lot of space it has a total of just under 12 gigs. Any help from anyone is greatly appreciated thanks and be safe out there
I just chose the Toshiba M550 over the Insignia F50 because of the local dimming array. What did you end up doing?

I have two Hisense smart HDR 4K tv's, and the picture on either tv is just fine. But also I use the fire stick and the fire cube and even do they both are smart, they both have Amazon prime built in. I still use my fire tv devices to do my streaming. On broadcast tv and any sports on live tv is amazing in 4k. No issues with gaming on either Hisense Tv. In my opinion never need to look at any other brand, Hisense is perfect for me.

My issue, if you want to call it that, is this: I'd sure like to purchase the Amazon Omni 75" 4k tv, but I don't pull the trigger with it because of some of the set's current poor specs. I wonder if Amazon will have an improved version of the Omni by at least Thanksgiving of this year. If so I will make my purchase of it in a NY heartbeat. ♐

They have updated to major new Fire OS versions for Fire Tablets. Not so much for Fire TV devices.

The concept of the "dumb" TV without a built-in OS is essentially dead now. That's because it is literally cheaper to make a smart TV than to make a dumb TV because the smart TV continues to generate profit after it is purchased, due to ads and content purchases on the OS. The question is no longer whether you should buy a dumb or smart TV. It's more about making sure the TV will degrade well enough when you eventually need to just connect an external streaming device to it. All Fire TV Smart TVs, except for the 2017 ones made by Element and Westinghouse, let you turn a setting on that will power on the TV to the last input, so you never have to see the built-in OS if you don't want to.
Thanks. That's good to know. I didn't think about a setting like that. I'll have to look for that.

With the Fire TV Stick line - I'll be watching just how much free space is left on an 8GB stick with Fire OS 8 (Android 11) installed. They've got to go to a 16GB model at some point. Maybe that's why current sticks may not ever be upgraded to Fire OS 8?
That. And the fact that they’re already puke in the mouth slow seems likely

Could just be that model, but we know that if you keep the TV long enough you'll be way behind the curve compared to the separate Fire Sticks, so I'm of the mind that I'll never buy another TV with a built-in OS like that.Curious, though, would attaching a separate Fire Stick work or would the built-in OS insist on being the only interface allowed? Cool. I'm going to try that. The Fire TVs are so cheap compared to others of similar specs, so I assume that Amazon is either taking a loss or subsidizing them in some way. But I didn't want to end up with another frustrating TV. I'm going to test this with my Insignia and see if I notice a difference. Thanks!

💬  Your Fire TV Stick 4K Max might be switching down to 1080p without you realizing it
  1. Carolyn says:

I have the same issue...Not sure what is going on here. I do not have this issue with my samsung 4k tv but I just bought this Sony TV and for whatever reason when I turned off the TV and firestick 4k and turn it on after a couple hour break, the resolution is set to something else. For example, I set the resolution on the firestick 4k to "4k" but after being off for several hours and turned back on, it seems to change to "1080p" for whatever reason.I'm assuming it is a Sony TV issue, and not firestick issue because my samsung tv works fine with resolution with the Firestick 4k.Does anyone else have this issue?
Well I have 2 4k fire sticks n the jus started this glitching thing first it would shut off , then I had to unplug it from the wall n finally it jus started to kick itself offline it shows my internet was connected but I couldn't get it to fire in or reboot any more now my remote won't work so I jus gave up n bought me a Roku tv n got netflixks n Hulu n Pluto tv

This article is dumb, this was sus until I read from the writer of this story, “Google announces new hardware at the Google I/O event”. That is a complete lie. This year was completely different. They showed some improvements in the upcoming Android OS, a cheaper version of Pixel 6a, then video render of a Pixel 7, a new tablet in 2023.
