The Channels app is on sale for $14.99. This is the lowest price that this app has ever been, which is a discount of $10 off the regular price of $24.99. It might seem like a lot to spend on an app, but this app provides a service that most other companies charge a subscription fee to provide. The Channels app gives you arguably the best interface for accessing the live OTA channels from an HDHomeRun network tuner. If you don’t care about recording content, which is a big aspect of the Fire TV Recast, and just want to access your free live broadcast channels on your Fire TV, an HDHomeRun and the Channels app is the way to go. The 2-tuner HDHomeRun is on sale for $69.00 right now, down from $99.99, and the 4-tuner HDHomeRun is on sale for $99.99, down from $149.99. That means you can pay just $83.99 for both the base HDHomeRun and the Channels app to get OTA channels on your Fire TV with no subscription fees.
I am unfamiliar with this technology. Does the OTA actually need an antenna, or is the OTA signal actually pulled from the Internet? We live in a valley, in Southern South Dakota and cannot get conventional OTA signals.
OTA comes in through an antenna.
Great app. if you have an Hdhomerun and don’t have the Channels dvr service, this is a no brainer
does it work with tablo ?
or add anything for the recast?
Most people could just watch OTA directly through their TV tuner. Not sure what the lifespan of new OTA hardware will be with ATSC 3.0 on the horizon.
ATSC 3 is going to be a super slow transition. It will take years. ATSC 1.0 will be simulcast for years. So for probably the next 3 years hdhomerun will still be worth buying. Same with Recast. Amazon would not have released it if it had a 1 year lifespan
Why would someone pay 15 bucks for this app, then 8 bucks a month to record when you could just pay Plex 5 bucks a month (or 120 for lifetime) and get the same features plus a lot more?
I wondered this too until I reluctantly tried it. It just “looks and works better” than Plex for me. On a Fire TV Stick 4K, Plex Live TV gives me “jumpy” play on a number of channels. The Channels app results in perfect play. Not nearly as important, the guide looks great.
I will still try to figure out why I am having the problem with Plex. I would welcome suggestions about it, but realize it if off topic.
