A new CBS News app has just been released for the Amazon Fire TV. The app lets you stream live news coverage from CBS’s new 24/7 news station CBSN. In addition to the live stream, the app features on demand video from CBS’s other news programs, such as CBS Evening News, 60 Minutes, and MoneyWatch. The app separates on demand video into several categories, including U.S., World, Politics, Entertainment, and Health. All of this content is free of charge with no cable subscription needed.

This new app is one of several recent indication that CBS is seeing beyond the traditional cable subscription model. Last month, CBS became the first major network to launch a streaming TV service that allows subscribers to watch live content and classic shows online, without having a cable subscription. The $5.99 per month service streams local CBS stations live which makes it possible to watch the network’s new shows as they air for the first time. The new service is currently only available through their iOS and Android app and has not yet been added to their Amazon Appstore app. With any luck, the delay is due to CBS adding Fire TV support.

Update

11/9/16 The original CBS News app has been removed and replaced with a new version. The links in this post have been updated to point to the new app.

No cable subscription needed = awesome!

Way too expensive. If all local channels will charge that much, you might as well keep cable.

  3. Len Mullen says:

The app is free, Richard — no charge for the app, no charge for the videos, and no subscription charge.
