Google’s G10 Android TV remote works with the Chromecast and Shield TV, but not with Fire TVs

The Google-designed G10 remote is going to quickly become ubiquitous with Android TV as more and more streaming device manufacturers are choosing to include this remote with their streamers, and for good reason. In a sea of pretty horrible Android TV remotes, the G10 easily stands out as one of the best, thanks to a plentiful selection of buttons and a very close resemblance to the Fire TV remote in both size and button layout. Unfortunately, the G10 does not work with Fire TVs, Firesticks, or Fire TV Cubes, but it does work with the 2020 Chromecast with Google TV as well as the Nvidia Shield TV. However, if you’re thinking of using the G10 remote with either of those devices, there are some important shortcomings to be aware of. Read more ›

Fire TV’s new Alexa Remote finally makes its way over to the UK

It looks like Amazon is finally bringing the new Fire TV Alexa Voice Remote to the UK. The remote is listed as out of stock, but there is now a listing for it on Amazon’s UK site, as well as a new listing for the 3rd-gen Fire TV Stick bundled with the new remote. Amazon introduced the new remote 2 months ago in numerous regions but did not include the UK at the time. While you can’t buy it in the UK just yet, it looks like it’s only a matter of time. Walmart’s Onn Android TV streaming box is a rebranded Dynalink / Google ADT-3 reference design

It turns out that Walmart’s Android TV Onn UHD Streaming Device is just a rebranded Dynalink Android TV Box, which is itself actually just Google’s ADT-3 developer reference design that is manufactured by Askey. I didn’t know it when I was reviewing Walmart’s box, but several helpful commenters lead to that realization. Running AIDA64, which lists hardware details, on the Onn streamer does show that it is manufactured by Askey. It also lists the model number as “sti6140d360” which differs from the Dynalink box’s model number by just one digit. Read more ›

Hands on overview of Walmart’s $30 Onn 4K Android TV streaming box

Walmart has released the Onn UHD Streaming Device, which is their first 4K Android TV streamer using their Onn house brand of electronics. The most impressive thing about it is its price, which is $29.88, making it the least expensive 4K streaming box from a well-known company. Even more impressive, considering the price, is that it comes with the Google-designed “G10” remote that has voice capabilities and TV controls. Check out my unboxing video above, where I compare the remote to numerous other popular remotes from Amazon Fire TV, Google Chromecast, Roku, and more. Then read on for a full overview of Walmart’s first attempt at streaming hardware.Read more ›

Amazon buys MGM for $8.45 billion

The rumors were true. Amazon has announced the acquisition of MGM for $8.45 billion. Assuming regulators allow the deal to go through, Amazon will own MGM’s library of content which includes around 4,000 films and 17,000 hours of TV shows. MGM franchises that will soon be owned by Amazon include 12 Angry Men, Basic Instinct, Creed, James Bond, Legally Blonde, Moonstruck, Poltergeist, Raging Bull, Robocop, Rocky, Silence of the Lambs, Stargate, Thelma & Louise, Tomb Raider, The Magnificent Seven, The Pink Panther, The Thomas Crown Affair, and many others. The deal isn’t just about acquiring rights to existing content because Amazon says they will “empower MGM to continue to do what they do best: great storytelling,” so, it seems like MGM will continue to release new movies and shows under Amazon’s ownership. Philo TV is raising its price from $20 to $25 — Subscribe by June 8 to lock in lower price

Philo TV will be raising its monthly subscription price from $20 to $25 on June 8, according to Deadline. Existing subscribers or those who subscribe by June 8 will be grandfathered in at the lower rate for as long as they keep their subscription active. So, if you had any inclination in subscribing, now is the time to do it before the price goes up. Philo is easily one of the best deals in streaming TV. They offer 63 channels for that $20/month price. Philo launched their streaming cable service 4 years ago and this is the first time they’ve ever incrased their price, although it did once have a $16/month plan with few channels that it dropped.

Plex is offering 20% off their annual and lifetime Plex Pass

Plex is currently offering 20% off of their Plex Pass. A 1-year Plex Pass is $31.99, which is down from its regular price of $39.99. This will renew at its regular price after the first year. The lifetime Plex Pass, which normally costs $119.99, is available for $95.99. This is a one-time payment for a never-ending Plex Pass. Plex discounted lifetime passes to $89.99 during Black Friday last year, so this sale is nearly as good but you also have the option of saving on an annual pass with today’s sale. Plex is the best media player for accessing all of your personal movies, shows, music, and photos, from all of your devices. While apps like Kodi and MrMC do much of the same, I’ve personally switched over to Plex for its unified database that keeps all of my devices in sync and for its simplicity, especially for accessing my media outside of the home. Most of Plex’s features are free, but a few premium features require a Plex Pass. Some of those premium features that I use most are hardware transcoding, which is a must for accessing content outside of your home network, TV show intro skipping, and remote content downloading, which comes in very handy when poor cellular/wifi speeds are too low to stream.

Ecobee smart light switch with built-in Alexa speaker and mics is on sale for $29.99 — Lowest price ever at 63% off

The Ecobee Switch+ is on sale for $29.99. At $50 off its regular price of $79.99, this is the lowest price that it has ever been. This isn’t an ordinary smart light switch. While it certainly can be controlled by an app or your voice, it goes much further by including a speaker and microphones built into the light switch itself, which makes it act like a little Echo Dot on your wall, with a blue light bar and all. The Ecobee Switch+ was announced in 2017 and went on sale in 2018 for $99.99. It didn’t gain much popularity at that price, which is probably why it dropped to $79.99 in 2019. That’s still a pretty steep price to pay, but at $29.99 it’s a pretty great bargain. Read more ›

Peacock TV update is having audio and commercial ad issues on Fire TV devices

Peacock TV updated their app last week and the new version is, unfortunately, causing issues on Amazon Fire TV and Firestick devices. Several users that sideloaded the app are reporting there are occasional audio issues, such as the audio cutting, specifically after ads stop playing. Another issue that seems common with this latest release is that ad breaks are starting too early and cutting off a bit of the content being watched. Read more ›

Amazon sale drops Fire TV Stick Lite to $24.99 and Fire TV Cube to $99.99

Amazon has put the Fire TV Stick Lite on sale for $24.99. That is 17 % off its regular price of $29.99, which is a pretty mediocre sale. A good sale would be $21.99 and a great sale would be $17.99, which is the lowest it has ever been. The Fire TV Cube is on sale for $99.99, which is also 17% off its regular price of $119.99. This is a decent price that we see about every other month, but if you’re a Prime member and can hold out for another month, which is when we expect Prime Day to be, then you’ll certainly save more on the purchase. The best Fire TV deal right now is the Fire TV Stick 4K for $29.99, if you qualify for the discount that is.
