Amazon’s ‘The Rings of Power’ series draws 25 million first-day viewers but reviews are blocked for 3 days

Amazon has announced that there were more than 25 million viewers globally that watched its original series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on the first day. That makes it the biggest premiere in Prime Video’s history. That’s good news for Amazon given that it’s the most anticipated Amazon original series to date and the most expensive to make. However, Amazon has executed its relatively new policy of putting a 3-day hold on all Prime Video reviews for the new series to stave off those unhappy with the release.

An Amazon representative told Variety that it has had a policy of blocking reviews for the first 3 days of all its original content since the release of Amazon’s A League of Their Own reboot. That series, like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, was getting review bombed for many reasons, both related and unrelated to the content itself. While Amazon’s policy can help its review score on Prime Video, it obviously does nothing on other review sites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power currently has a review score of 6.8 stars on IMDb, which isn’t too bad until you learn that 25% of reviews are 1-star. Rotten Tomatoes has the series sitting at an 84% fresh rating from verified critics, but its audience score is suffering the same backlash as IMDb’s score with only a 39% fresh rating. That score is up from 34%, which is where it was a few days ago, so it’ll likely continue to climb as legitimate reviews continue to trickle in.

“Critic” reviews are mostly worthless, and often pressure to give good revies to gain early access, etc..

  2. Tj says:

The show so far is good, but hasn’t blown me away as I was hoping for since it’s part of the reason why Prime membership went up.
