On February 4th, Amazon will make Chi-Raq, their first original movie, available for Prime members to stream for free. When Amazon first announced, at the start of this year, that they would begin producing original movies, they said they would make them available to Prime members within 8 weeks of their theatrical debut. Chi-Raq premiered in theaters on December 4th, making its Febuary 4th Prime debut just barely within Amazon’s promise. The quick turnaround from birth to release on Chi-Raq has been staggering. We first heard about Amazon signing Spike Lee to make Chi-Raq in April. The theatrical release came 8 months later and now it will be streaming to Prime members less than a year from its initial inception. At that pace, Amazon should be able to reach their goal of 12 original movies per year in no time.
