Amazon is planning to release at least 8 new Alexa devices this year, according to a new report from CNBC. Among the devices is high-end audio equipment that includes a subwoofer, an amplifier, and a receiver that all include hands-free Alexa capabilities. Amazon is also said to be working on a new in-car Alexa gadget and an Alexa-enabled microwave.
We’ve already seen leaks of a new Echo Dot and there will likely be a new Echo to go along with it. Since we know the Silk browser is coming to Echo Shows, that’s a good reason to believe that a new Echo Show is also on the horizon. There have been hints that the Fire TV 3 will be replaced and that Amazon is working on a Fire TV DVR device. All together that makes 5 potential new devices that utilize Alexa in some way that we already know about.
Premium audio has always been a weak point for Amazon’s own Echo line of smart speakers, so adding in an Alexa subwoofer would be a great place to start to improve an Echo-based multi-room audio setup. An Alexa amplifier and receiver could refer to anything from a small device like the Echo Dot that is meant to add Alexa capabilities to existing speakers, all the way to a full-fledged hi-fi home stereo hub.
Several new Alexa devices for the car have been released this year, including the Garmin Speak and Roav Viva. It sounds like Amazon has been paying attention and is ready to jump in with their own solution for taking Alexa on the road.
The rumored Alexa-enabled microwave from Amazon is probably the most shocking device included in the CNBC report. If actually real, I’d guess that it’s made by a 3rd-party manufacturer that Amazon has partnered with, as opposed to an actual microwave made by Amazon. These new devices should be announced sometime in the coming weeks, so we won’t have to wait too long to know what’s real and what’s not.
