According to The Wall Street Journal, Amazon is planning to release a $50 Fire tablet with a 6-inch screen later this year. That would make it half the price of Amazon’s current cheapest tablet, the Fire HD 6. Along with the release of this new bargain tablet will be a new 8-inch and 10-inch tablet. The current generation Fire HD tablets were announced a year ago last September. Amazon has always refreshed their line of tablets on an annual schedule, so expect to hear something official in the coming weeks.
A tablet with a micro SD card slot recently surfaced on the FCC’s website with hints of being an Amazon device. This is unlikely to be the new $50 tablet, since it will need to be stripped of frills to reach such an aggressively low price point, but it could be the 10-inch model. A large 10-inch tablet will carry a relatively hefty price, so a micro SD slot could be one of several bells and whistles included to justify the premium price.
