Amazon Prime Video app arrives on the Apple TV

As promised earlier this year, Amazon has released a Prime Video app for the Apple TV. The app is available in the app store for 4th and 5th generation Apple TVs and will also be added to the pre-app store 3rd generation model.

In addition to releasing the new app, Amazon is making their content available inside of the TV app on the Apple TV. The TV app acts as an aggregator to display content from multiple streaming video providers in one place. Netflix is still notably missing from the TV app, so it’s significant that Amazon has decided to be included in the app.

As expected, there doesn’t appear to be a way to purchase or rent content through the new Prime Video app on the Apple TV. That’s because Amazon would have to give Apple a share of all purchases made through the app and customers would not be allowed to use their Amazon account for payment. This is the considered to be the primary issue that kept Amazon from releasing an app for the Apple TV and is why they refuse to sell the Apple TV.

Now that it seems like Amazon and Apple have come to some kind of an agreement, at least for this new app, we might see the Apple TV return to Amazon.com. As of now, you still cannot buy the Apple TV through Amazon.

Darn! I gave up on the app for my 3rd gen Apple TV and sold it a few months ago. So guess and speculation aside in the forums, it IS coming.

Just tested it out and found a major problem, everything is in stereo and not Surround Sound. How can this happen?? Picture is great though….

The Prime Video App arrived on my German Apple TV 3 also.
Unfortunately only Stereo sound, even for purchased movies.
    This is disappointing!
Still not time for me to abandon the Fire TV.

Stereo-only cripples this app to being pretty much useless on our home theatre. Guess it’s nice to browse with. It’s almost like Apple smirked and told Amazon “here’s your dang app.”

I’ve seen this sorta crippling before. I really doubt either company will rush to fix this ‘oversight’ but I’ll try to remain hopeful. BTW I own a fire stick and an Apple TV.

Well, I for one am impressed. It is streaming 1080p/hevc/hdr over my crap dsl and the video looks real good too. Much, much better than from my firetv2 or shield can do.

But for home theatres, what good is a great picture when the sound is in stereo?

Wanting High quality sound and video from streaming, good luck.
Streaming in 4K and surround sound not there and maybe never will. Those media folks want to make the high quality users buy the Blue-ray disks, even better go to the theaters, so streaming competing in quality will be slow if ever to compete on quality. Then add the technology and cost challenges, want quality sound and video, buy or rent physical media.
Mirrors music, always less then physical media.
For me, will accept less for the convenience of having access to shows on many devices, with the ability of playing physical media when quality viewing necessary.

I’m glad I’ve never been an audiophile. My sensibilities don’t care about this proprietary sound format or that one.

I am enjoying the prime app on my apple tv. Stereo is just fine with me.
