Amazon Prime monthly membership fee is increasing by 18%

Starting today, Amazon is increasing their monthly membership fee for Amazon Prime from $10.99 to $12.99, according to Recode. That’s an increase of 18% and works out to $156 per year if you’re paying monthly. Prime Student’s monthly fee is also increasing from $5.49 to $6.49. The annual membership fee of $99 for Amazon Prime is not increasing. Neither is the $8.99 per month fee for just Prime Video. If you’re subscribed to Amazon Prime on a monthly basis for more than 7 months out of the year, it now makes more sense to switch to the annual membership.

This plus them shifting their focus towards tentpole content means I’m going to cancel my Prime in February after being a member for 5+ years.

If you’ve been a prime member for 5+ years, why are you paying monthly? If you pay yearly there is no fee increase. If you’ve been paying monthly and switch to yearly you’ll save money rather than be charged more. If your concern is the content and you subscribe to prime for the video, you can do a monthly prime video subscription only and that price isn’t changing either.

Lucky me moved over to monthly payments in November since money was tight.

This and a number of decisions they’ve made recently are driving me away from the company entirely. The end of the HBO deal, the move towards tentpole content instead of good content, the fragmentation of services within their ecosystem and the drive to push existing customers towards them (hello Amazon Music Unlimited and the elimination of user uploaded music)

I’d much rather just cancel and sell my hardware instead of giving them more money per month for less of what I want.

If you have a Fire TV 2, I’d gladly take that unwanted POS off your hands for you. Give me a shout and let’s make a deal!

Turned it into a Kodi box for the local media on my network.

If you’d like to buy a launch Echo with voice remote, make an offer. lol

I’ve found Prices cheaper on Jet, Ebay, Walmart and Target. Subscribing 2 times a year for Video only is all I need. This is from someone who only uses Amazon devices.

    Hi Elias,
    I really miss your podcast.
Now that your baby is bigger maybe you can start again once a month or so?
Prime is 8$ a year if you have food stamps.
    Thanks for posting

Amazon paid me to take a survey earlier this month that was all about Prime price increases. Based on the survey, I think the yearly plan will soon go up as well. They seemed to also be thinking about launching different tiers of Prime at different price points. Cheaper plan for shipping benefits only, removing Music and/or Video from the standard plan, and creating a more expensive plan that is all-inclusive like the current service.

Consumers getting a pay raise next month. Be prepared for many more price increases. Businesses are bolder with price increases when their customers have more money.

    Total Bul******.

Why does. $624 Billion dollar company need to gouge its extremely loyall longstanding customers for another 20%?

Could you imagine what Amazon would do with even more market share?

I guess they just want people to pirate all their content.
