Amazon Prime membership will likely be discounted to $68 this Friday

september-23-2016-calendar-circle

Amazon has fallen into the habit of discounting the price of Prime membership to celebrate award show wins. They dropped the price of Prime to $72 after winning at the 72nd Golden Globes, to $67 after winning at the 67th Emmys, and to $73 after winning at the 73rd Golden Globes. Amazon just won 6 Emmy awards at the 68th Emmys, so there’s a good chance they’ll be discouting Prime membership to $68 very soon.

The sale usually happens the Friday that follows the award show and lasts only one day. So if you’ve been thinking of signing up for Prime, or giving a year of Prime membership as a gift to someone, mark your calendar and wait until this Friday. These award show discounts are usually the only time the price of Prime membership is ever reduced.

Update

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look Amazon is going to be discounting Prime membership this year to celebrate their Emmy wins. Sorry if you got your hopes up for nothing. Prime was discounted for the last 3 award show wins, but it looks like history doesn’t always repeat itself.

What if your already a Prime member?

    • Itzme says:

I’m wondering that also. I wonder if I could hold onto the $68 membership and then activate it on my Prime anniversary later this year.

      • AFTVnews says:

When Amazon first offered this type of discount, you could gift it to yourself and extend your membership, but they’ve now closed that loophole. I’m pretty sure you can send a gift membership to a secondary email, but to use it you have to let your existing Prime membership expire first. I’m not positive if this still works though, and I’ve never done it myself.

for the previous 3 times, if you did a chat with customer service while a Prime Member, they’d refund you the difference. I did it each time.

Did this happen in the UK as well?

What are the best features of Prime membership?
Do you get free shipping and access to all of Amazon Prime video content on demand content on our firetvs? (or does the video access cost extra?)

    • AFTVnews says:

The full list of Prime membership benefits is here.

The ones that pertain to the Fire TV are Amazon Prime Video access, Prime Music access, and Audible Channels access (through Alexa).

Do you think Audible Channels is coming to us UK Prime subscribers any time soon? The rotational audio books sounds appealing. I thought they would release it alongside the Echo to make the Echo even more appealing.

I have been planning on getting a student membership, which is 50% off the regular prices. Does this mean I could get it for $34 rather than $50?

  5. ~B says:

Last year they wouldn’t allow gifting at all, there were long discussions about it on some deal sites.

What if I had a membership that expired in February and never renewed. Can I now sign up and get the $68 membership price?

    Are comments being deleted? why?

    • AFTVnews says:

Yes, I’ve deleted several spam comments that were all made by the same person (based on IP) that complained and berated me for a”fake” post and a “hoax” post.

I never said the Prime discount was a certainty, nor that Amazon announced anything. I simply said it was likely based on past sales.

I suspect the annoyed people are coming from Slickdeals.net where someone posted about this deal and claimed an Amazon customer service rep said it was definitley going to happen. I’m sorry Amazon didn’t discount Prime a 4th time like they’ve done the past 3 times they won at a big award show.

I was not trying to mislead anyone. I simply stated the facts and the likelihood of Amazon repeating a pattern.

Looks like they didn’t budge on the price this year

Hilarious the number of bloggers who followed you off a cliff with this whopper of a non-story….. (I stopped counting at 20) At least you could take some credit…. Weren’t you the first to post about this whopper? Oh, go ahead, tell us who told you….. Ya all were so smug, with each one of you hinting that you had some insider confirmation of what was afoot, that history would repeat itself.

Guess Bazos is too busy pumping for his favorite candidate…. and/or losing to much ink there with the WaPost…

    • escot says:

oh, and before you delete me, I see (from your comment above) that you fairly point out that your post was based merely on past patterns and that, as such, you had reason to believe it would repeat itself. (I also see that you apparently don’t work for Amazon, though you do set yourself up as a go to source of info about a line of their products)

Anyway, take a bow, you were the first (if google searching is to be believed) who saw the possibility of the $68 deal…. Sooooo many other blogs, including some ordinarily reputable ones, re-posted similar speculation, then added suggestions that they had “insider” confirmation….

Well, maybe Amazon will see the publicity opportunity come to your rescue….. (for which, I will duly congratulate you) I’ve been off “Prime” for two months….. and I’m actually enjoying the de-tox…. discovering the deals to be had elsewhere…. Kinda liberating to be able to think outside the Bezos-box/cage

      • AFTVnews says:

I think the rush was a result of the SlickDeals post that claimed an Amazon rep confirmed the deal. I just identified a pattern and speculated it would repeat a 4th time. Yes, I was wrong, but I never lied or made a single false claim, unlike many others.

I bought it for $67 last year on 9/25. This year they want to charge me $99. Nope! Not going to do it. My Prime membership just expired and I don’t care! I’d rather pay COSTCO for my Executive Membership and buy their great products in-store and on their website. Here’s an example:

I bought a new LG refrigerator. I wanted one from Costco but they didn’t sell the specific size I needed to fit into a built-in type space. I placed the order with Amazon including a SquareTrade extended warranty. They “authorized” my card for the LG Refrigerator and charged my card for the SquareTrade warranty. What happened? About 3 or 4 days later they sent me an email stating they couldn’t sell the LG Refrigerator for “technical reasons!” WTF? I called my credit card company and they said there was absolutely no problem with my card… in fact, Amazon had pre-authorized the card to prove the money was available.. and it was! I called Amazon and got some foreign speaking gal who was dufus. She couldn’t tell me the reason and I had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get the SquareTrade warranty canceled and the money refunded to my card! What HELL and Amazon never did give me an answer even when I emailed them asking “what happened.” I ended up buying the refrigerator from Home Depot who shipped it immediately and their installers did a great job.

However, I purchased a new LG Range and LG Dryer from Costco and got a much better price than HD or Amazon and it was shipped fast, efficient, and the installers were 1st class and did an excellent job.

I don’t need Amazon for movies. I’ve been a member of Netflix since 2000. Tried Amazon Prime movies for a year and most of their titles don’t even list the year it was made nor even the names of the actors. Furthermore, the info about the movie is either incomplete or scrolls off the screen with a bunch of dots (….).

2nd day shipping? Yeah if you buy more than $49. I don’t need it. I don’t care if it takes a week to get something to me. I buy my groceries from Costco and anything I buy from Amazon is NOT perishable so I don’t care. If I need something within 1 or 2 days, I’ll go to a local brick ‘n mortar store to get it and pay a couple dollars more! To heck with Amazon!

Amazon should bill you for the customer service calls this little article generated.

  12. Nika says:

So is there a promo discount this year or not???!!

  13. Jackie K says:

Geez, ya’ll are pretty salty over a guy’s ASSUMPTION of what MAY happen with Amazon’s membership fee. It was an accurate assumption; I too would’ve thought they would lower their membership based on past history.

But guess what guys?? Unless it was Jeff Bazos himself saying they were indefinitely going to lower their prices, I’m not stupid enough to bank on one person’s foreshadow on a blog.

So if any of you were to actually call Amazon over this, lol, well I pity you. There are no words.

Great blog, and thank you for the info.
