Amazon Luna cloud gaming service is now open to all US residents without an invitation

Amazon first launched its Luna cloud gaming service in October 2020 with an invite-only program. The service then became available to all Fire TV owners without needing an invite a few months later. There are have been other ways to use the service without an invite since, but now Amazon is dropping all invite requirements for Amazon Luna in the US. If you haven’t tried the service yet, there has never been a better time since Prime members can now play a selection of games completely for free without needing to sign up for a free trial. If you don’t have a game controller, you can also now use a virtual controller through your phone before shelling out for a physical controller, like the Luna controller, which is currently on sale for $49.99. Amazon Luna games can be played through Fire TVs, Fire tablets, Windows PCs, Chromebooks, Macs, iPhones, iPads, and Android phones.

The Luna software is still, and probably never, going to be available on the marketplace for the AFTV2, but is for the Gen2 Stick. Same firmware level, but i dont think anyone would attempt to play Luna on sure a weak Stick. It plays great on my AFTV2 with the gen2 game controllers. But is there a link the your downloader app or other easier way to get the Luna App to update other than sideunloading it from my cube and then sideloading it to the AFTV2.

    • Performance-wise, it doesn’t take much to play Luna games because it is essentially just a video stream with commands going back and forth. The reason it is officially available on the 2nd-gen Fire TV Stick and not on the 2nd-gen Fire TV is simply that there are FAR more sticks than boxes out in use, so it was worth the effort to get it tested on the old sticks but not on the old boxes. Good to hear that sideloading it works though and there is no simple way to keep it updated other than pulling it from one device and putting it on another, sorry.

The last thing we need right now is another “invation”– misspelled or otherwise. InvITation.
