Now that Amazon has shut down the Amazon Underground appstore that offered “actually free” apps, they’ve released its replacement in the form of a new Amazon Appstore app for Android devices. The new app is redesigned from the ground up with a more visually driven interface that is cleaner and simpler.
New navigation tabs across the bottom of the app allow you to easily jump into the various sections of the app. The Categories tab is nearly identical to the categories you’d find on a Fire TV or Fire Tablet when browsing for new apps. The My Apps tab gives you an easy place to see and install any pending app updates.
Love them or hate them, Amazon Coins are prominently featured in their own tab where you can check your balance, find apps that offer free coins, and, of course, buy coins. Despite having the annoyance of being another digital currency you need to manage, Amazon Coins do offer a steep discount on app and in-app purchases that other appstores, like Google Play and the Apple App Store, simply don’t offer.
If an app you’re going to spend money on is available in both the Google Play Store and the Amazon Appstore, you’re better off buying it through Amazon using Amazon Coins because of the coin discount. The more Amazon Coins you buy at once, the more you save. Current discounts range from 1% off of 300 coins to 25% off of 50,000 coins, and everything in between.
It is great that Amazon Underground app is being replaced since it used >1gb of storage. But the new app reminds me of in app purchases in “Free” games just a little bit “off putting” with all the Ads and the Coins.
I will try it out then delete if need be.
Does it work on android tv?
What, no announcement that FTV3 is shipping today? I’m counting AFTVNews to get one and give us the review.
Hmm does this mean Prime Video app is going to so working when I disable the Underground app on my phone?
Recent update to Prime Video causes it to not start if you disable any of the Amazon apps. I get a 1055-MATE error.
Easy fix. Uninstall all Amazon apps and she use them.
*not use them.
I have upgraded the Amazon Appstore app in my smartphone (didn’t use the Underground app) to the new 30.12.0000 version and one thing I miss is the “Installed apps” list.
There is only a “Not installed apps” and an “Updates available” lists.
I still get the underground app store on my Fire HD 8 2015 model in the UK.
Amazon can do a lot of things really well. Software/apps is definitely not on this list. The new Amazon appstore app is nice and appealing on a smartphone. But install it on a tablet and prepare for a very bad surprise.
Landscape mode? Nope. App adjusts to the actual higher screen resolution of a tablet? Nope.
On my 12 inch tablet the new app looks like some kid just pushed the wrong button and some creepy app came out as a result. This is disgusting – literally!
Amazon is a billion dollar company, so please – PLEASE – higher some competent app developers. There are enough on the market.
