The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sony Pictures has opened up bidding for streaming rights to Seinfeld and Amazon, along with Hulu and Yahoo, is one of the front runners. Netflix, who recently paid more than $500,000 per-episode of Friends, has decided to pass on the “show about nothing.” Grabbing exclusive streaming rights to Seinfeld would fit right into Amazon’s playbook. They recently chose not to renew an agreement with the BBC due to its lack of exclusivity, resulting in the loss of several BBC shows from Amazon’s instant video catalogue. Sony is looking to get at least $500,000 per-episode for Seinfeld, which values the 180 episode deal at over $90 million. It may seem like a lot to pay for a single show, but if this Seinfeld agreement mirrors the 4 year agreement that Netflix signed for Friends, it would be less than 2% per year of the $1.3 billion that Amazon spent on Prime Instant Video in 2014.
Overrated AND overpriced now too. Though I seem to be in the minority of people who really didn’t care for Seinfeld at all and most certainly don’t agree about it being “brilliant” at all.
Seinfeld definitely was an innovator in it’s own right although I wasn’t a fan I saw the humor and importance of the show and I do like curb your enthusiasm… At any cost I hope amazon wins and offers this for free.
Wonder if “exclusive” means also removing it from Crackle, which Sony owns. They offer 10 different episodes each month, which is enough of a Seinfeld fill for me.
