Amazon Hardware Sale Pricing Guide — Be prepared for Prime Day

amazon-hardware-sale-price-guide-header

With Prime Day just around the corner, Amazon is expected to have great deals on their growing line of electronics. This pricing guide will help you determine which sales on Fire TVs, Echos, Fire Tablets, and Kindles are just okay, which ones are pretty good, and which ones are great.

Glossary

“Okay Sale” – You can think of prices labeled “Okay” as being common sale prices. These are prices we’ve seen before and expect to see again throughout the year. If you don’t want to wait until Black Friday in November, go ahead and buy items reduced to “Okay” prices, because it’s a decent sale. Otherwise, you’re better off waiting.

“Good Sale” – You can think of these prices as occurring only once a year. These are prices you’ll really only see during major sales like Prime Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday. Many Amazon products will never drop below the “Good” price. If you’ve been considering buying a product, but have been waiting for a price drop, you should definitely make the purchase if it is reduced to the “Good” price point.

“Great Sale” – With the exception of products that are currently sold out, like the Echo Dot and Kindle Oasis, you can think of these prices as occurring once in a product’s active life cycle. These are usually rock bottom prices. If you’re at all considering a product marked down to a “Great” price, you should place the order immediately and decide later if you want to cancel the order, because most products will sell out if they reach the “Great” price point.

Amazon Fire TV & Fire TV Stick

amazon-sale-guide-2016-fire-tv
The Amazon Fire TV did not go on sale during Prime Day last year in the US, but it did go on sale in the UK during Prime Day for a US equivalent price of $74. The 2nd generation Fire TV has been put on sale for $84.99 several times this year. The cheapest price the 2nd generation Fire TV has ever been is $74.99, which started on Black Friday and continued through Cyber Monday last year. The cheapest any Fire TV has ever been was Cyber Monday in 2014 when the 1st-gen Fire TV was $69 for just a few hours. If the Fire TV goes on sale this Prime Day, I would say an okay price would be $84.99, a good price would be $74.99, and a great price would be $69.99 or less.

amazon-sale-guide-2016-fire-tv-gaming-edition
The Amazon Fire TV Gaming Edition does not go on sale nearly as often as the regular Fire TV. It was not on sale during Prime Day last year, nor was not on sale during Black Friday or Cyber Monday. The first time it ever went on sale was for $114.99 a couple weeks before Christmas last year. That is also the cheapest price it has ever been. More recently, Amazon has been putting the Fire TV Gaming Edition on sale for $124.99 somewhat regularly. If the Fire TV Gaming Edition goes on sale this Prime Day, I would say an okay price would be $124.99, a good price would be $114.99, and a great price would be $109.99 or less.

amazon-sale-guide-2016-fire-tv-stick
The Amazon Fire TV Stick was on sale for $24 during Prime Day last year. It was the most popular item Amazon sold that day and it sold out in about 50 minutes. We saw a repeat of that sale price this past Black Friday when it was $24.99. The Fire TV Stick has been on sale for $34.99 several times in the last year. The cheapest the Fire TV Stick has ever been was $19 for Prime Members only during a special pre-order period at launch. If the Fire TV Stick goes on sale this Prime Day, I would say an okay price would be $34.99, a good price would be $24.99, and a great price would be $19.99 or less.

amazon-sale-guide-2016-fire-tv-stick-voice-remote
The Amazon Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote was not released yet during Prime Day last year, but if it had been available and on sale, the price would have likely been $34 since the regular non-voice Fire TV Stick was $24 that day. The Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote was $34.99 during this past Black Friday, which is the cheapest price it has ever been. It has also been on sale once for $39.99 and once for $44.99. If the Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote goes on sale this Prime Day, I would say an okay price would be $39.99, a good price would be $34.99, and a great price would be $29.99 or less.

Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, & Tap

amazon-sale-guide-2016-echo
The Amazon Echo was on sale for $124 during Prime Day last year. It was $149 during Black Friday last year and $153.71 for a day a few months ago. The cheapest the Echo has ever been was when it was available to Prime Members only by invitation for $99 at launch. It was also available once for $94.99 when purchased using the Amazon Store Card because the $149 sale and separate $50 off card promotion overlapped for a day. If the Amazon Echo goes on sale this Prime Day, I would say an okay price would be $149.99, a good price would be $124.99, and a great price would be $114.99 or less.

amazon-sale-guide-2016-echo-dot
The Amazon Echo Dot is the least likely Amazon device to go on sale tomorrow. It is currently sold out with no way to even place an order for future delivery when it returns. It has also been back-ordered ever since it was announced. Since the Echo Dot is selling for around $150 on eBay, if somehow you could place an order tomorrow, an okay price would be $84.99, a good price would be $79.99, and a great price would be $74.99. But really, even the retail price of $89.99 would be a bargain compared to third-party sellers.

amazon-sale-guide-2016-tap
The Amazon Tap has already gone on sale this Prime Day, through the Alexa exclusive countdown deals, for $79. Since it’s a new product that wasn’t around for Prime Day, Black Friday, or Cyber Monday last year, we don’t have many sales to use for comparison. The only sales we’ve seen for the Tap is when it was $109.99 last month and $111 a few months before that. If the Amazon Tap goes on sale this Prime Day to non-Alexa users, I would say an okay price would be $109.99, a good price would be $99.99, and a great price would be $79.99 or less. (Keep in mind that it would be silly for the Alexa exclusive Prime Day price to be more than a non-exclusive Prime Day price.)

Amazon Fire Tablets

amazon-sale-guide-2016-fire-tablet
The Amazon Fire 7″ Tablet was not around during last year’s Prime Day, but there have been several sales to use as reference. The lowest price that this already cheap tablet has ever been was $34.99 during Black Friday last year. It has also been $39.99 several times this year and as recently as last month. If the Amazon Fire Tablet goes on sale this Prime Day, I would say an okay price would be $39.99, a good price would be $34.99, and a great price would be $29.99 or less.

amazon-sale-guide-2016-fire-kids-edition-tablet
The Amazon Fire Kids Edition Tablet was also not around during last year’s Prime Day. During Black Friday last year, this tablet was $84.99. Since then, this tablet has actually gone on sale for $79.99 several times, which is the lowest it has ever been. If the Amazon Fire Kids Edition Tablet goes on sale this Prime Day, I would say an okay price would be $79.99, a good price would be $69.99, and a great price would be $59.99 or less.

amazon-sale-guide-2016-fire-hd8-tablet
The Amazon Fire HD 8 Tablet was not around during Prime Day last year, but it’s closest equivalent at the time, the Fire HD 7, dropped from $139 to $79 during Prime Day last year. The only regular sale the Fire HD 8 has had was just before Christmas when it was $129.99. The cheapest it has ever been was $79, but that was a very odd and limited sale because it dipped down to $79 occasionally, for only a few minutes at a time, over the course of three days. If the Amazon Fire HD 8 Tablet goes on sale this Prime Day, I would say an okay price would be $129.99, a good price would be $99.99, and a great price would be $79.99 or less.

amazon-sale-guide-2016-fire-hd10-tablet
The Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet was also not around during Prime Day last year and there wasn’t an equivalent device available, since it’s Amazon’s first 10 inch tablet. This tablet has been $179.99 several times this year, with the most recent sale occurring last month. The lowest price this tablet has ever been was $169.99 during Cyber Monday last year. If the Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet goes on sale this Prime Day, I would say an okay price would be $179.99, a good price would be $169.99, and a great price would be $159.99 or less.

Amazon Kindle E-readers

amazon-sale-guide-2016-kindle
The Amazon Kindle is all-new and was just released three weeks ago, so the older model was the one available during Prime Day last year. It was on sale for $49 that day, which was the lowest price it had ever been. Between Prime Day and when the new Kindle was announced, the old Kindle went on sale for $59 every couple months. If the new Amazon Kindle goes on sale this Prime Day, I would say an okay price would be $59.99, a good price would be $49.99, and a great price would be $39.99 or less.

amazon-sale-guide-2016-kindle-paperwhite
The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite did not go on sale during Prime Day last year. It did go on sale during Black Friday for $99 and it has been that price several times since. The lowest price is has ever been was $89 for Prime members a few months ago. If the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite goes on sale this Prime Day, I would say an okay price would be $99.99, a good price would be $89.99, and a great price would be $79.99 or less.

amazon-sale-guide-2016-kindle-voyage
The Amazon Kindle Voyage did not go on sale during Prime Day last year. It was $169.99 in November of last year and it was $149.99, its lowest price ever, in April of this year, but both sale prices were for Prime members only. The Kindle Voyage is the oldest model Kindle still available, so I don’t expect Amazon will discount it this Prime Day, since their stock is likely low. If the Amazon Kindle Voyage goes on sale this Prime Day, I would say an okay price would be $169.99, a good price would be $149.99, and a great price would be $129.99 or less.

amazon-sale-guide-2016-kindle-oasis
The Amazon Kindle Oasis is the new high-end Kindle, which was released a few months ago. It has never been on sale. Furthermore, it is out of stock and has been out of stock most of its existence. For those reasons, I don’t expect the Kindle Oasis to be on sale during Prime Day. If the Amazon Kindle Oasis goes on sale this Prime Day, I would say an okay price would be $279.99, a good price would be $269.99, and a great price would be $259.99 or less.

Great post! I’m bookmarking this to use beyond Prime Day for future sales. I’d love to see this updated as time goes on.
