In an effort to get more smartphone app developers to include Amazon Fling support into their apps, Amazon’s developer blog has highlighted a few apps and a couple SDKs that currently support the media receiving feature built into the Amazon Fire TV. It’s often difficult to uncover apps that support Amazon Fling, since it’s rarely mentioned as an available feature in an app’s description. Developer will mention adding Fling support in their update log, but that gets overwritten the next time the app gets updated. Here are the apps Amazon has highlighted.
Amazon Fling, which allows you to send audio, videos, and pictures from Android and iOS smartphones and tablets to a Fire TV, is Amazon’s version of Google Cast and Apple Airplay. Since both Google and Apple don’t allow Amazon to integrate Cast or Airplay into the Fire TV, Amazon has built their own protocol which unfortunately hasn’t gained much traction since its release. Here are the Amazon Fling capable apps highlighted by Amazon.
Video & TV Cast for Fire TV
“With Video & TV Cast you can browse through the web and stream or cast any video you want on your Fire TV. Just navigate to your favorite website and send the embedded video with a single tap to your Fire TV. The discovered video will be shown below the browser. A tap on the video link will send it to your Fire TV immediately.”
Available from the Amazon Appstore, Google Play, and the Apple App Store
SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drive
“Enjoy the freedom to wirelessly store, share and stream content across smartphones, tablets, PCs and Macs with the SanDisk Connectâ„¢ Wireless Flash Drive app. Simply connect wirelessly from your mobile devices to the wireless drive and instantly access your movies, photos, music and documents from around-the-house or on-the-go while avoiding the common hassles of cables, attachment limits or Internet availability.”
Available from the Amazon Appstore, Google Play, and the Apple App Store
BubbleUPnP UPnP/DLNA
“Stream all your music, videos and photos to various devices in your house. BubbleUPnP can access your media from a lot of sources, including UPnP/DLNA media servers, local media stored on your Android device, popular cloud media storage providers like Google Drive, Google Photos, Box, Dropbox, OneDrive, and more.”
Available from the Amazon Appstore and Google Play
Tubio
“Cast web videos and music from your phone to your TV wirelessly and for FREE. Use this app to browse your favorite web media to discover online video or audio you’d like to enjoy – then simply tap play. Tubio automatically discovers all connected TVs around (over the same Wi-Fi network) and lets you stream with just your phone.”
Available from Google Play and the Apple App Store
Amazon has also highlighted the LG Connect SDK and NexPlayer SDK. Both of these allow developers to integrate Amazon Fling, along with several other casting protocols, easily into their apps.
Do you know of any Amazon Fling capable apps? List them below in the comments!
Finally! Glad Amazon is doing something about Fling… I still dunno why it’s taking devs soo long to implement it? You’d think they’d be chomping at the bit for it?
Web video cast and server cast on Android also support fling. BTW I use podcast addict and enabled the external player which allows flinging via web video cast. Rocket on iOS supports fling too.
Awesome! Thanks for the info!
