Amazon Fire TV software update 5.2.4.2 begins rolling out

A new software update has started rolling out to 2nd-gen Amazon Fire TVs. The software update carries version number 5.2.4.2 and build number 574262620. It’s not clear at this time if the update adds any new features or if it just contains bug fixes. So far, I’ve only heard of 2nd-gen Fire TV set-top boxes receiving the update, so it may not be released to other Fire TV models. Sound off in the comments if you receive the update, which device it arrived on, and if you notice any changes.

For those wondering, this update has nothing to do with the new blacklisted app. The two things are not connected, since I’ve confirmed that devices still on older software versions still receive the updated blacklist.

I hope it fixes the bug causing problems with 24p in Kodi/MrMC. That’s the reason why I never upgraded to the 5.2.4.1

    • Y314K says:

I also hope they fixed that too. Since I’ve yet to turn on that feature in any flavor of Kodi. Wonder what the hoopla is about lol .

Also hope they took a look at Mirror Casting for this update too.

      • Adam says:

I use it in SPMC and have held off on upgrading (thank you root) until its fixed.

        • Y314K says:

Does it help not just on local storage streaming but online sources too?
Does the source need to do anything special for it to work. Guess what I am basically asking is if the 24p setting help on just about any streaming 3rd party addon scenario.

          • Adam says:

I don’t know about third party add-ins because I don’t know how they work.

With my bluray rips, SPMP adjusts the refresh rate of my display to match that of the video file which, theoretically, results in smoother playback. If I understand the problem with the last update, this is the feature that is affected.

Again, we got to the end of the reply depth. So replying to myself.

That is what I figured. That it mostly affected localize storage/backups mostly. I usually use Plex for this content. So have not had to play with it on any Kodi flavor.

I haven’t got it yet but 5.2.4.1 defaults to 60Hz regardless if the box was set to 50Hz which is important in the UK/Europe, so have had to change the settings and cancel to get it back. I hope this update resolves that bug.

    • King Nothing says:

I don’t know if you already got the update to check for yourself, but I received the update yesterdays and can say that this bug still exists.

Tried to tell German support about it but they didn’t even understand what’s the problem blaming my TV to be the causes of this.

So maybe you can try to report this too. And maybe you are better in explaining the problem, so this will at least be solved with the next update.

We’ve been having lots of issues with the Disney Channel app on our Fire Sticks so hopefully that gets addressed in this update.

    • Dean S says:

I’ve been having tons of issues with Disney Channel and Disney XD apps for the Fire TV box. I have worked with Amazon and Disney directly and no one can solve the issue.

It’s weird…the app looks fine until you log in with cable/sat credentials. Once I unlock it with the creds, it all goes crazy. The list of programs along the bottom disappear and are replaced with hollow tiles, and weird screen caps of episodes appears to the right.

    • Becker says:

Have you tried submitting your issues directly to Disney Channel app support [support@disneyabc.zendesk.com] and also copying (CC:) Amazon Fire TV support [firetv-generalistcc@amazon.com] on any of the emails that you send Disney?

Every developer has to provide support and contact info on the app’s page in Amazon’s store. Since it’s two big companies (Disney and Amazon) with substantial cash and resources that aren’t delivering what their marketing has promised, just keep contacting them until they get it resolved. And if usage of this app is tied to your cable subscription, include them in the complaints too.

Below I’ve quoted the relevant info for the DISNEY CHANNEL which among other things shows that the app hasn’t been updated since 2/15/17; the following is from the app page located at:

I hope this fixes the Optical audio issue on Gen1 boxes. Currently I can no longer use optical cable for digital sound. I can’t even select the options. But if I disconnect the optical cable, I can choose hdmi. Not my ideal solution since I split between my receiver and tv at times due to my projector. Fingers crossed they fix what they broke last update.

    • Moose says:

Glad I held back on updating. The Gen1 optical output is what I use to get sound to my well-aged surround receiver. Please update us on this issue.

      • Michael says:

The optical out works with Kodi and MrMC but not with Amazon video. Weird, but it’s true. So you can watch a prime movie, but it won’t be digital 5.1 unless hdmi. But you can watch Kodi or MrMC and it works fine.

    New and Enhanced Features

Fire TV now features a data monitoring tool you can use to get dynamic information about the amount of Internet data your device is using for apps and streaming services. You can choose your preferred video quality for Amazon Video streaming, set data alerts, and view monthly data usage for your apps. To learn more, go to Data Monitoring on Fire TV.

A PIN Protect Prime Photos App option has been added to Fire TV parental controls preferences. With this setting turned ON, you’re prompted to enter your PIN before you can open the Prime Photos app for Fire TV. You can use this option if you only want to block access to the Prime Photos app, and your photos/personal videos from Amazon Drive. To learn more, go to Set Up Fire TV Parental Controls.

The new “Recommended by Your Apps” row on the Home screen features content recommendations (e.g. for movies, TV shows, apps, games, music, audiobooks, and news) from supported apps installed on your Fire TV. Select an item from the row to see which app made the recommendation, or press the Menu Menu Button on your remote to view available options. The “Recommended by Your Apps” row won’t show on your Home screen if you have parental controls enabled for your Fire TV.

    • King Nothing says:

These are actually the features introduced with 5.2.4.1 update. Reading the changelog from the other devices that are still on 5.2.4.1, you will see that these features are mentioned there too.

So all they did is to change version number in the Fire TV 2 box … But what has changed from 5.2.4.1 > 5.2.4.2 remains a mystery.

  8. R Marfil says:

I have a 2nd Gen Fire TV and it keeps trying to force me to upgrade to this new 5.2.4.2 version, but the update fails every time. The firmware completes downloading, I select to install the update then it hangs at “Your Fire TV will now Restart”. I’ve let this message sit for as long as 30 mins and restarted a dozen times, but cannot force this update to install.

  9. Edub says:

I purchased a new Firestick about a week ago and it came preloaded with 5.2.4.2. The biggest issue I’m facing is this version doesn’t allow the Kodi No Limit app. It lets you go through all the steps of installing, even down to it unzipping the No Limit File, but then it will not load No Limit. I’m thinking this OS version may have blacklisted No Limit as well.
    :(
