Amazon Fire TV software update 5.2.4.0 possibly halted

I’m not positive, but it seems like the 5.2.4.0 software update, that started rolling out to Fire TVs and Fire TV Sticks just over a week ago, has been temporarily halted. It’s not uncommon for Amazon to stop distributing a software update if a serious issue is detected with the first round of devices that receive the update, and it seems like that may be the case with this latest software update.

When Amazon stops pushing out a software update due to an issue, they’ll fix the issue and begin pushing out a slightly different version of the software update. When this happens, the update’s version number usually remains the same between version, but the build number changes. This is what happened with the earlier 5.2.1.0 software update, which initially had a build number of 550144920, but was then halted and restarted with a new build number of 550145120, due to a bug that prevented the screensaver from launching.

Amazon just updated their Fire TV software version page last night to now list the new 5.2.4.0 update. However, instead of listing the build number of the update, like they’ve always done in the past, the page instead has the word “[PLACEHOLDER]” where the build number should be. This is the main reason I think the first build of 5.2.4.0 has been halted and a new build will begin rolling out in the near future. Amazon has never omitted the build number on that page, so I think they know a new build number is coming soon, but instead of waiting for the new build of 5.2.4.0 to be finalized, they updated the page with a placeholder.

Of course, I could absolutely be wrong about this, but it does seem like this updating is taking longer than usual to arrive. None of my 5 devices eligible for this update have received it yet, which is unusual for me when the update has been out for over a week. The only issue with the 5.2.4.0 that I’ve come across that might be serious enough to halt the update is an odd incompatibility with older TVs that can only display 1080i/480p.

I’d love to know in the comments below what date exactly did your Fire TV or Fire TV Stick receive the 5.2.4.0 update. It’s actually possible for devices to update to the initial 5.2.4.0 build even after it has been halted. This could happen if a device receives notice of the update during the roll out but doesn’t decide to install it until much later. Despite that, getting a quick senses of when these updates have arrived could give us a better idea of whether or not the update has been halted.

I was starting to wonder, as none of my devices have recieved it.

  2. Bic Basher says:

I received the update on Tuesday evening. No real issues, bar All4 (a UK TV app) crashing mid way during playing a show.

  3. Joe says:

I never received the update. I guess I can stop checking every day.

  4. Ken says:

I’m guessing I got the update on one of my firesticks around November 28th or 29th.

  5. Jimmy says:

Got mine yesterday after checking everyday. US fire tv 2

  6. PIA says:

Got mine 2 days ago, horrible update because you can no longer pin code just photos it replaces it with having to pin code EVERY app.

  7. Jim Carter says:

No updates on my 3 devices

  8. Mick says:

I received the update just after I bought a firetv stick. UK account BBC IPLAYER app is blocked and marked incompatible. I side loaded it after extracting from my firetv 1 and it works as expected. It doesn’t show on any menu except appstarter so it must be in the banned list!
Is this problem unique to me? Anyone else have the problem?

    • Bic Basher says:

That’s strange, all of my sideloaded apps from Ireland, Switerland and the US are showing using the Amazon UI with my Fire TV 2.

      I’m UK based.

      • Mick says:

Amazon couldn’t help. But de registering the stick and re registering fixed the iPlayer issue. At least I learned how to pull apps from one fire tv to load on another!

        • Bic Basher says:

I think Fire TV apps are also in the cloud like the Fire OS apps for tablets, so you can easily download them on your Fire TV again. I’ve done this with apps from my old Fire Stick 1.

Obviously you have to sideload the Android .apk files again if you have another Fire TV or Stick.

Received 5.2.4.0 on only one of 3 fire tv devices so far. 6 December install date

  10. Rick Duval says:

Have 2 Fire TV2’s one has the new update/interface:
This is just my humble opinion:
    – if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!!
    – update/interface is essentially “exactly the same, only different!
    – what has the update accomplished for me – the end user??

I’m wondering if the stick runs better with it. If I understood Elias correctly, it sounded like it will be cleaner & more optimized code.

  11. Greg Lumpkin says:

My Fire TV Gaming Edition got the update, but my regular Fire TV didn’t.

  12. Erick says:

Only 1 of the 3 Fire sticks I have got the update. I was confused why only 1 got the update and my other 2 didn’t get the update.

    • Adam says:

Because its not you Erick, its me…

no wait, wrong talk, sorry, its not you, its your devices individual serial number in Amazon’s database. Your first Firestick’s number is earlier in the list than your other two.

  13. Big John says:

My newly purchased Fire TV Stick 2 has the new OS, build #565189620. The device was installed shortly after Black Friday. The new OS was installed December 6.

  14. Ben says:

I got the update Dec. 6th. No problems noticed yet. Box is fire TV 2.

  15. Michael says:

Amazon Deutschland customer here, received the update tuesday. I noticed no real change, for better or worse. Just a different layout and design of the interface. But mind you, for some reason, Amazon has assigned me to a fast ring whenever they update software. I always get them virtually the moment they are announced on my Fire TV and Kindle. So I might not be your typical Amazonian :-) (for whatever reason they pick me as a “guinea pig”)

  16. Brian says:

I tried 6 times to do the update and each time it said installing, it failed. This is in the newest model of the fire tv. It appeared to install but never would. I pulled power, tried again and it worked. No issues since. No other devices have gotten it yet

  17. Dave69 says:

Received it on a Firetv 2 on 12/6.

  18. Pete says:

I sure hope they give owners of the new fire stick the option to calibrate the screen. It would be simple to roll it in to this update. I posted last week and got an answer that you van calibrate inside kodi, and it worked nicely. However, this applies to only content that you are viewing on the kodi app and not the Amazon side. Guess I’ll just keep my fingers crossed and hope they pull their heads out of their arses.

  19. Bridget McCready says:

I got my Firestick Dec 2015. Not sure what my numbers are. But it’s working just fine

  20. Bryant8 says:

I have one that was shipped with 5.2.4.0, while the existing one I have is still on 5.2.2.0 and not changing despite a refreshed update check. Two different interfaces, but I like the new one. Waiting…

  21. Roy says:

  23. Vegas Zipper says:

I have two firesticks in two different tvs. One updated to 5.2.4.0 on 12/7, but the other is still at 5.2.2.0. I can’t get it to update even with a manual system update or a restart. I was confused about this but after reading your article it makes sense that they have halted the update for now. Thanks!!

    • Vegas Zipper says:

Wanted to add to my post that both my firesticks are the newest model. The one that updated to 5.2.4.0 is plugged into the wall adapter to get power. The one that did not update was plugged into the tv usb for power and it gave me a message that it might not be able to handle an update because it wasn’t getting enough power. This may explain why one device updated and the other didn’t. Either way I’ve never been a huge fan of the firestick interface, and so far I like what I’ve seen of the new version…so I’m eagerly waiting for them to roll out the completed new version.

      • Wag says:

I have a firestick gen 2 I got for free with the DirecTV Now deal. It didn’t even have 5.2.2.0 preinstalled. I still don’t have 5.2.4.0 yet.

  24. Jeff says:

    Fire TV Stick 2 updated 12/10 5.2.4.0 (565189620)
    It’s rolling.

  27. Ulises A.Rodriguez, Ph.D. says:

I am also still waiting for this New Update to arrive to all my FTV devices:

    Two FireTV2 Box.

    One FireTV1 Box.

    Two FireTV1 Stics.

Apparently Amazon have halted this update or is releasing it extremely slowly.

An update for FTV devices, it had never taken so long!

  28. Armand says:

My Fire TV Stick 2 received 5.2.4.0 (Cinema UI)
Calibration setting is still not available in this OS update.

    • David Wingfield says:

I received the update on Tuesday and have lost the kodi logo from recent and my apps as well. Any idea on getting it back? Thanks

  30. Bic Basher says:

I’ve discovered a small niggle with the upgrade. Occasionally, especially when using Kodi, I get an icon offering me the option to open ES File Explorer.

  31. NickyP says:

My fs updated last night. How can i get Kodi to work again. I can see the logo but nothing else?

  32. Mike says:

    It works great on mine

  33. Joe says:

I have the latest upgrade 5.2.4.0 on my fire box now I have ads covering the whole screen every 5 to 10 minutes…is there a fix for this.

  34. I received the update on 1 of my 3 sticks also have box no update there. No issues to speak of on the updated one though.
