A couple weeks ago I asked everyone to submit information about their Fire TV to try and determine a relationship between a Fire TV’s serial number and its rootablility. I’ve been examining the data and have concluded that it is possible to know what software version is on an Amazon Fire TV just by looking at the serial number printed on the outside of the box. Before posting my findings, I’d like to ask one last time for those who haven’t submitted their information yet to do so now. I especially need submissions from people who’s Fire TVs arrived with version 126.96.36.199 or greater. This includes UK and German units. Regardless of how many new submissions I receive, I’ll post my findings on Monday.
The Fire TV’s serial number can be found in 1 of 3 ways:
- From the home screen, navigate to “Settings” > “System” > “About”.
- Look at the label on the box. See photo above.
- Connect via ADB and run the command:
adb shell getprop ro.serialno
