Amazon has just put the Fire TV on sale for $69! That’s the absolute cheapest price we’ve ever seen for the Fire TV. Even cheaper than the $74 Black Friday deal. The sale is today only, so it’s expected to end at midnight PT tonight, but may end earlier if enough are sold.
Also note that Amazon is still offering $40 off the Fire TV if you buy Prime Membership with it. There’s a trick where, if you’re already a Prime member, you can buy Prime membership in order to save $40 and then redeem it for Amazon credit. The $40 saved is split among the Fire TV and the Prime membership fee (which you’ll fully get back) so you’ll end up saving about $17 off the Fire TV price. The exact savings varies slightly depending on your local sales tax.
How to save an additional $17 if you’re a Prime member:
- Add both a Fire TV and Prime Membership to you cart and begin checkout.
- When asked, check the box next to “Give Amazon Prime as a gift” and enter your own email address in the provided field.
- Ensure the $40 savings is applied and complete the order.
- When you get an email about the Prime membership, click the “Already a Prime member?” link
- On the page that loads, verify you’re signed in with the correct Amazon account and click “Continue”.
- On the next page, click “Get your Amazon.com Gift Card” to be credited back the amount you paid for the Prime membership. You don’t get $99 back because you actually didn’t pay $99 for the membership. You paid a little less because the $40 you saved during checkout is split among the Prime membership fee and the Fire TV cost.
- That’s it. You just saved about $17 extra on the Fire TV in exchange for having some money stored as Amazon credit.
You won’t be credited the full cost of the prime membership, but the prorated amount after the discount. The $40 discount is split between the prime membership and the cost of the Fire TV. So it is more like a $16.XX extra discount on the Fire TV (and a $24.XX discount on the prime).
Yup, the amount will vary based on your local taxes. For me, the Prime membership was charged at $82.22 (which I got back as credit), so I saved an additional $16.43 on the Fire TV.
Are they still rootable if I got them from Amazon?
Some people are still getting rootable ones from Amazon while others are getting non-rootable ones. It’s luck of the draw of what happens to be in your local Amazon warehouse.
I’ve purchased about 8 of them on the west coast and all of them as early as last week are rootable versions. I’m tempted to pick one up as my parents firetv lost its root because at that time I didn’t know how to disable updated. :(
I’m confused because the new version may get rooted soon and this whole switch of firetv for firetv may not be required,.
That’s great to hear. Thanks for letting us know your recent experience.
Sideloading is still allowed though correct? I have a first run FTV with XBMC (not rooted) and would like another.
yes side loading works. good luck you may get the rooted version.
Too bad I don’t need a 5th ;) This is a crazy great deal, and FTV box is superior to Stick. Well worth the extra money if you want XBMC and 1:1 BD rips playback.
Does anybody know if this works on the Amazon Prime trial? Meaning Redeeming the prime for a gift card on a trial account instead of prime membership.
As an additional step, you can go back to your Fire TV order and apply part of the gift account balance to pay for it. When it’s all said and done, the AFTV is paid for, I have a gift account balance of a little over $20, and I owe about $75 on the prime membership.
I never got the email about the prime membership.
what to do?
Resolved. If anyone has this problem: In your order account on Amazon, you should be able to resend the gift announcement (to yourself). Then you will receive a gift card credit for the amount you paid. Anyway, this was incredibly complicated, but worth it. LOL! Hats off to the person who dreamed this up!
If I don’t want to pay for prime can this still be done? I have prime trail
Wow this was awesome I got my 3rd AFTV for $52. It was shipped 12/2/2014 from Fernley NV to the Bay Area in CA and came with 51.1.0.1_user_510055620. I had a friend order on Black Friday as well from Texas it was delivered from Kentucky I believe, it was also rootable with 51.1.1.0_user_511070220
does this still work?
