The 2nd-generation Amazon Fire TV Cube is on sale for $99.99. That’s $20 off of the regular price of $119.99 and just $10 above the lowest price that the new Fire TV Cube has ever been. This is the most powerful Fire TV that Amazon has ever made and it’s a worthy upgrade to any previous model. Some advantages of the latest Fire TV Cube over the Fire TV Stick 4K, which is also on sale, apart from the performance boost, are double the internal storage at 16GB vs 8GB, more RAM at 2GB vs 1.5GB, Fire OS 7 vs Fire OS 6, an included Ethernet adapter ($15 value), built-in far-field voice capabilities w/ speaker, and a built-in IR blaster for more reliable control of your TV and home theater equipment.

Does the 2nd Gen Cube support the UGreen GigE adapter? (bonus points if it can support full GigE transfer rates)

  2. Nate says:

Strongly considering this one as a replacement for the venerable AFTV 2 box, purely for the spec boost and OS upgrade to Android 9. Can anyone who owns one comment on how strong the IR blaster is? I don’t plan on having one exactly in a perfect line of sight to my devices’ IR sensor, but not tucked completely away either. Would hate to buy it and find out I need perfect placement for it to work.

Includes an IR Extender Cable with the device, if hiding it behind the TV or out-of-sight, mind you the remote is Bluetooth and the IR keys are more for TV volume + On/Off control.

I am interested in this as well BUT my only concern is the quality of the
WIFI antenna built in, a topic I don’t feel gets enough attention, have there been any comparison tests run against other devices (There are many comparison tests for other specs but I don’t often see WIFI antenna integrity). Like many folks I can’t run ethernet all over my house unless I want to trip over it in the hallway! I rely on strong WIFI. I know the quality of the WIFI signal is heavily dependent on the quality of your router and ISP but some of the reception quality has to be placed on the receiving device itself. I also know mesh WIFI would help but that adds hundreds $$$ to the cost.

Unfortunately , I’ve read a lot of negative reviews about this device (and that’s on though the majority are positive. It looks like anyone with WIFI issues uses the included ethernet dongle (a no go for me) BUT it seems the dongle is limited to 10/100 Mbps which is concerning. I’ve also read many reviews that claim the Cube is not compatible with Disney+ or CBS All Access subscriptions UNLESS purchased directly through Amazon? I get both for free through my ISP (an awesome deal) I have no intention of purchasing new subscriptions.

My sister has a cube 2nd edition, it’s amazing. The Wifi is great on 5ghz – It’s literally the best Amazon device you can buy right now. It takes the 4k stick (that I use) to a new level. I would buy it and try it, I bet you’ll keep it. All apps can be sideloaded and I see no reason why you won’t be able to sideload those 2 apps.
If your wifi is on the same floor and you have a decent router (ASUS etc) then you’re good.
