It’s been 4 months since the Fire TV received a software update that added new functionality. The last two updates have consisted only of bug fixes. Well, the drought of new Fire TV features is about to come to an end. My sources at Amazon tell me the next Fire TV software update, dubbed the “connectivity” update, should begin rolling out to select devices tomorrow, March 24. As always, the update will first begin arriving on a small subset of devices before ramping up and making its way to all Fire TVs.

This update is expected to add support for USB storage expansion, an item that has long been at the top of the list of most requested features. Additionally we’re expecting to get expanded bluetooth capabilities that should allow Fire TV owners to natively connect bluetooth headphones, speakers, and keyboards to their devices.

I’m told the timeframe for this update is not set in stone and may change due to the complexity of these new features. Amazon has not been shy to halt a software update’s deployment in the past. If you recall, the 51.1.1.0 update began rolling in June of last year only to be stopped and replaced by a new version two weeks later. Don’t be surprised if that ends up happening with this new update.

Finally, I’m told the Fire TV Stick, which will begin international preorders tomorrow, will likely not be receiving all the new features coming to the Fire TV. We never expected the Stick to receive USB storage support, due to its lack of a full size USB port, but we’ll have to wait and see whether or not the expanded bluetooth capabilities make their way to the Fire Tv Stick. As always, I’ll post a full overview of what new features each device receives once the update arrives.
