A new software update has rolled out to the 2nd-gen Amazon Fire TV and the 1st-gen Fire TV Edition televisions by Element and Westinghouse. The new update uses the same 5.2.6.7 version number as the previous software update, but it increases the build number to 623530020. Strangely, the 1st-gen Fire TV and both Fire TV Sticks, which are the other models running Fire OS 5, have not received this new update.
The new update doesn’t make any visible changes or add any obvious new features, so it seems like it just fixes some bugs. Amazon has been updating all of their Fire OS 5 devices at once, so it’s a bit odd that only some Fire OS 5 devices are receiving this update. It’s possible that the update fixes something related to 4K video playback, since only 4K Fire OS 5 devices have received this new update.
Amazon has already updated their Fire TV Software Page with this new software version number. Since they only updated the Fire TV 2 and 1st-gen Fire TV Edition listings, it’s probably safe to say that other devices will not be receiving this software update. Be sure to let everyone know in the comments below if you notice any changes after receiving this software update.
For those of you with rooted Fire TV 2s, Rbox has already uploaded a pre-rooted ROM of this new software version. You can find the download link at the top of the usual XDA Forum post. Please be sure to donate to Rbox to support him and thank him for continuing to keep all of our rooted devices updated.
WOW! rbox is amazing! That was quick!!! I donated 50 bucks to him when he released the first rooted rom for the AFTV2 after epoch publicly rooted the device. I love rbox. A true gem to the FireTV root community!
Oh sh!t. I wasn’t even aware that there was a way to root the AFTV2 or if it was even worth it due to the risk of potentially bricking the device, but since the rBox has a higher than expected adoption rate from what I’ve noticed then I think it’s a/b that time I root my own AFTV2.
Elias,
Old news, lol.
I commented about this on Thanksgiving Day, in an unrelated article. Remember?
I received this Update on that day on my FTV 2nd Gen device. The German Update Page reflected this at the time. The US Page did not, until a few days ago.
You said Thanks and should start your own Blog, where others can comment about these things. I assumed that you were just very busy with all the Black Friday deals, that it slipped through the cracks.
Yeah, mostly just busy, but I also wanted to wait and see if the other Fire OS 5 devices would get this update as well.
Apparently I already installed that update on November 27.
Wish they’d bring over some feature that the newer device recieved but I guess maintenance patches are all we’re getting from now on.
My Fire Stick stopped working
Hey Elias,
rbox notes on the XDA page: “This ROM contains updated DRM firmware.” Any idea what this is referring to specifically?
I have had 2 firsticks and the last is the newer 4 k but always trouble. 1 St kept blacking the TV out and now newer version has no sound unless I reset each time I turn on. No thanks… Back to my trusty Roku
My remote for fire tv stick quit working. I did, however, find a remote control software for fire tv stick in google play that I downloaded to my phone. Sad that it lasted such a short time cuz I really love Fire tv.
Hit up Amazon. They sent me a new remote for my FTV2 stick that I bought back in November 2017,so well past anything they are responsible for. They acetate really good about replacements. They credited $30 for another stick as well. Was able to buy the 4k for a few $$ on black Friday. If they credit you, you can use on any Amazon product. Chat and call work great. I was pleasantly surprised with how well they took care of my issues. I’ve had the Amazon batteries leak and corroded the inside, which they replaced as well.
Search YouTube for firestick updates,I believe it’s called. Shows how to add a keyboard to firestick! I got a rechargeable(I hate batteries) wireless mini keyboard from Geek (look on Google play store) & hooked it up using a OTG cable. It works great & I don’t use the remote any more, I only keep it for emergencies!
Sorry, the YouTube is called “cool firestick hack” & it shows how to add a wired or wireless keyboard & other items. I tried adding the wireless keyboard (purchased from Geek) & it works great plus I can still use the remote without changing anything!!
Anybody really happy or sad about their fireTV Recast? Thinking about getting one when it goes on sale again.
Charlie I am very happy with the recast on my cube. Nice guide. rarely towards the end of a long day of use the sound gets out of synch or the video stutters. I restarted the recast and it now seems better. Waiting for the promised ability to plug in a external USB drive. I have found the external USB drive setup for the cube itself oftens fails but it may be because I was transferring the USB drive back and forth to a laptop to copy and backup saved video files. Maybe not so robust.
Thanks for the reply. I am currently using a Stream+ and it works OK, but I was thinking about trying something new. I tried HDHomerun in the past and I didn’t like the guide or the fees. I thought about a Shield and a Tablo, but there again there are fees to get it fully functioning and that would definitely be expensive.
I realized the Recast might be the ideal setup for a fireTV user. It isn’t cheap, though, so I’ll have to regret passing on Cyber Monday and wait for the next sale.
BTW, I feel like it’s OK to discuss issues unconnected to the post, because we are all good resources and I’m not aware of another way to take advantage of that.
Netflix is currently doing a lot of drm updates
4k fire stick is the best love it
Stick to “Roku’, never have any problems on any version you choose to buy.
