Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet on sale for $49.99 — New model likely coming soon

Amazon has just put the Fire HD 8 tablet on sale for $49.99. That matches the lowest price that this tablet has ever been. Amazon device sales are not usually an indicator of new models coming soon, but this current sale might be an exception because nearly all variants of the Fire HD 8 tablet are currently out of stock. While sales don’t usually indicate a new model is coming, low supply usually does, so a new Fire HD 8 tablet is likely on the horizon.

Only the blue version of the 16GB Fire HD 8 tablet with special offers is currently in stock. All of the other 3 colors are out of stock. It’s similar for the version of the tablet that ships without special offers because only the black color is currently in stock. As for the 32GB model, it’s currently available in 3 colors with special offers while the other 5 variants are out of stock.

I’ve always said that sales are not an indicator that a new Amazon device model is coming. Amazon simply does not tend to have “fire sales” to clear out old stock. They simply continue to sell older models until supply runs out. The exception to this is when a device flops, like the Fire Phone, which did go through a legitimate fire sale at the end of its availability.

The best indicator of a new model coming is the existing model going out of stock and remaining out of stock. Amazon seems to try to time their device manufacturing supply chain so that they run out of stock around when a new model is released. Sometimes they undershoot and a current model will stop being manufactured and go out of stock before a new model is available.

That seems to be the case here with the Fire HD 8. This might be because the current model was released in June of last year, instead of in September/October like it had been the 5 years prior. The extra few months it has been available could have thrown off its availability.

Regardless of the reason, it seems pretty certain that a new Fire HD 8 will be announced and/or released in the coming months.

I am still seeing $79.99 when I log on to Amazon

The march of planned obsolescence continues. I wonder what features they’re going to make exclusive to the next generation.
