Amazon Echo Sub and Smart Plug leak out ahead of today’s event

Amazon is holding a big hardware announcement event today, but there’s still time for a couple more leaks. Amazon’s UK site briefly listed the product pages for their upcoming Echo Subwoofer and an Amazon-branded smart plug, according to Pocket-lint. Both items are expected to be announced in just a few hours, but here’s a hint of what’s to come.

The upcoming Echo Sub will be an accessory that is paired with either an Echo or an Echo Plus to add bass to your music listening setup. It is wireless, so you’ll only need to connect it to power. It has a 6-inch down-firing subwoofer that uses 100W of power. It appears to be covered in cloth and at least a black color is confirmed.

Interestingly, the product page states that the Echo Sub can “pair with two of the same compatible Echo devices for rich left/right stereo sound.” From that statement, it sounds like you’ll be able to use two Echo devices as stereo speakers, but it’s unclear if the Echo Sub is required for the setup to work or if it can be optionally added to such a setup. The Echo Sub was listed for £75.00 when it briefly leaked on the Uk site. Considering the Amazon Echo sells for £89.99 in the UK, it’s probably safe to say the Echo Sub will be between $80 and $100 in the US.

Something else that leaked on the UK Amazon site is Amazon’s own branded smart plug. The page states that the plug works without a hub and is controlled through the Alexa app. In addition to being able to control it by voice and through the app, you’ll also be able to set schedules for the plug to automatically turn on and/or off.

What’s most peculiar about the plug is the leaked price of £95.00. If accurate, that would put it above $100, which is quite expensive when you consider that most name-brand smart plugs cost around $20 to $30. Either the listed price is not accurate or there’s much more to this plug than the leak tells us. Perhaps it has Alexa built-in and can function as an Echo Dot with a mic and speaker. We’ll find out soon enough.

Is there no way to watch the event live?

Ha, that plug cost. If its that price would anyone buy these? I would want it to make a cup of tea for that not just turn the kettle on.

How exactly does the plug work with Alexa?
