The third generation Dot is a better sounding device if you plan to use the internal speaker. If you’re going to connect your Dot to powered speakers or an audio system, the sound quality is about the same, and the look of the older device fits into a collection of audio components better than the new cloth covered one does. Amazon has a new device for that, the Echo Input, but at this price the Dot is significantly less expensive.
