Amazon announces new 2nd-gen Echo Show 5 with improved camera and first Echo Show 5 Kids edition

Amazon has announced a new 2nd-gen Echo Show 5 and, for the first time, an Echo Show 5 Kids version. These new models come with minor improvements in some areas, such as their camera, but certainly aren’t a reason to upgrade for most people who already own the previous model. In fact, there’s even a feature on the old model that has been dropped from the new model.

The new Echo Show 5 is available in Charcoal (black/gray) and Glacier (white) colors, as the old model, but is now also available in a new Deep Sea Blue color. The new model costs $84.99, regardless of color. That is $5 less than the list price of the outgoing Echo Show 5, which Amazon has dropped to $49.99. For an extra $10, you can bundle the new Echo Show 5 with a Blink Mini camera, which saves you $25 compared to buying them seperately. Amazon is also selling a new adjustable stand for $19.99 in all 3 colors of the new Echo Show 5, but there’s no discount if you buy it bundled.

In addition to the new blue color, the only other significant difference between the new and the old Echo Show 5 is an improved camera. The new Echo Show 5 has a 2MP camera, which is equivalent to a resolution of 1080p. That’s a decent upgrade from the 1MP camera (i.e., 720p) on the outgoing model. The camera still has a physical shutter that you can slide to cover it for added reassurance that it’s not being used.

What remains the same on the Echo Show 5 is the 5.5-inch touch screen, the single 1.65″ speaker, and the dual microphones. It is still powered by the same MediaTek MT 8163 quad-core processor, so the new model isn’t going to be any snappier than the old one. It still supports 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WiFi, so Amazon hasn’t added WiFi 6. One thing that Amazon has, unfortunately, removed is the 3.5mm audio out port which is available on the old model. So, if you want to connect the Echo Show 5 to external speakers, your only option to do so with the new model is Bluetooth.

For the first time, Amazon has made a Kids version of the Echo Show 5 available. While there has been a Kids version of the Echo Dot for multiple model generations, this is the first time one of Amazon’s smart displays has received the treatment. Like the Echo Dot Kids version, the Echo Show 5 Kids version costs only $10 more. For that price, you get a green “Chameleon” color, a 1-year subscription to Amazon Kids+ (a $35 value), and a 2-year worry-free guarantee where Amazon will replace it for free should it break.

The new Echo Show 5 for $84.99 and the Echo Show 5 Kids version for $94.99 are available to pre-order now. They will both be released on June 9, 2021. Amazon has also announced a new Echo Show 8 today with significant improvements.
