Warner Bros. has announced that they will be releasing all of their new films in 2021 both in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day. All films will be available in 4K, starting with Wonder Woman 1984 on Christmas day. This hybrid release model is set to last for just the one year.
New Warner Bros. movies set to be released in 2021, if no unforeseen delays occur, currently include:
- The Little Things
- Judas and the Black Messiah
- Tom & Jerry
- Godzilla vs. Kong
- Mortal Kombat
- Those Who Wish Me Dead
- The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
- In The Heights
- Space Jam: A New Legacy
- The Suicide Squad
- Reminiscence
- Malignant
- Dune
- The Many Saints of Newark
- King Richard
- Cry Macho
- Matrix 4
The new movies will only be available on HBO Max in the US and only for one month after they premiere. They will leave the streaming service after that while they remain in theaters. It seems like access to all of the movies will be included with an HBO Max subscription, but I haven’t seen that explicitly stated by HBO. There’s a chance HBO may charge extra for some or all of these movies, like we saw Disney do for Mulan’s debut on Disney+.
Update
HBO has stated that the movies will be available to subscribers at no extra charge.
According to the promo video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZzR8FB8EEE the films will be available for “no extra cost to subscribers” of HBO Max.
Also the Gizmodo story at https://gizmodo.com/amc-is-pissed-1845804062 says:
When asked whether the films would be free to subscribers or available for an additional premium fee, as with the Premier Access platform on Disney+, a WarnerMedia spokesperson told Gizmodo that there will be “no additional charge to HBO Max subscribers.”
Awesome, thanks for pointing that out! I’ll update the post.
