Alexa now supports group calling on Amazon Echos and Echo Shows

Amazon says that group calling is now available for audio calls through an Echo or video calls through an Echo Show. The feature supports up to 7 participants and is available in Austria, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, the US, and the UK. You can go into the Alexa app to create a group containing multiple contacts and then call that group at once by saying “Alexa, call [group name].”

Group calling currently requires each participant to have an Echo device, but Amazon says that participating in a group call through the Alexa app is coming soon. Each person in a created group must also accept being added to the group. Unlike services like Zoom, there are no time limits for how long the group call can last.

Speaking of Zoom, it was announced earlier this year that Eho Shows would begin to support Zoom video calls. That functionality is now here but, unfortunately, video calls are only supported on the Echo Show 8 for now. Other Echos can join a Zoom meeting as well, but with audio only. To use Zoom with an Echo, say “Alexa, join my Zoom meeting.”

Lastly, Amazon has also added call captioning to the Echo Show. Video calls, audio calls, and drop-ins can now display near real-time captioning for US English.

The group option sounds great, Interesting that Zoom is only in the USA and only on the show 8″. I wonder why not other parts of the world such as for group calling and why it is only on the Show 8″ and not the Show 10″?
