Great podcast. In your look forward, I am surprised you did not acknowledge the almost certain impact of the Sling TV set top box. In your review, you rightly concluded that OTA+Sling TV+Netflix was probably a complete solution for many people. A $100 AirTV Player changes everything. That is *my* guess at the price and impact.
Sony (Vue), DirecTV (Now), Hulu, Amazon (Prime), and Walmart (Vudu) have to be paying attention. Will we see more partnerships? Will OTA-integrated streamers be the next best thing?
Thanks. I certainly could have talked about a bunch of other companies in my look ahead, but I chose to just focus on the big 4 (Amazon, Google, Apple, and Roku) to keep it somewhat concise.
Sling TV’s AirTV will certainly be interesting to watch, especially if they start giving them out for free with subscription commitments, which I suspect they will. It’ll all be about marketing, because the average new cord-cutter, which is their primary customer for the AirTV box, has likely never heard of Sling TV.
Anybody using a TV would find this integrated approach to OTA interesting. But the killer option might come in the 2nd or 3rd generation devices. And that would be built in OTA DVR support. Not just cloud DVR but local DVR storage of OTA programing.
Kind of like a much cheaper Tivo Bolt with some cable subscription programing.
Then even seasoned cord cutters would need to pay attention to Sling devices. Cloud only OTA DVR’ng might get Sling into trouble. Just ask Aereo. But a All-in-one option that includes cheap & easy built-in OTA DVR capability would really be something for all cord cutters.
Hi Elias, could not watch live, too many holiday relatives to deal with. When I click on the video link above I get a message that says “This video is restricted and you must be approved before watching” Is this something new?
