I understand what you’re saying about Android root exploits always being patched, Elias. But I do wish Amazon would think outside the box a little and maybe provide a “Developer’s Model” with an unlocked bootloader, like a Nexus phone, for …I dunno, $150 or something.
That way the device could be rootable to those of us that want to tinker with what is really a decent little box, without a known exploit in Android waiting to turn grandma’s Nettflix machine into a porn-serving-mailbot. Of course, like most other rootable devices, once the user unlocked the bootloader, they would be on their own for support and warranty.
Amazon could simultaneously make a little extra money and enter into that buzzworthy symbiotic relationship with power users that Linksys enjoyed with the WRT54GL or that Google has with Nexus devices users. Heck, they might even steal some of the Shield users that went Shield because they dislike Amazon’s lockdown of the device.
I realize their probably reaching their goals with the current Fire TV business plan, but I really think their missing a nice opportunity here.
