When the Fire TV Stick 4K Max launched, it introduced a new setting that allows you to fully disable all HDR, as opposed to only being able to choose from HDR being always on and HDR being adaptive. This setting is handy for those with quirky TVs, AVRs, or HDMI switches that don’t behave correctly with HDR signals. Thankfully, the Fire TV Cube 3 also has the same option to disable HDR. Now if only Amazon would add it to older Fire TV models, like the 2nd-gen Fire TV Cube.
See all my 3rd-gen Fire TV Cube coverage here.
Still has the same bug as the Cube v2, where if your TV supports Dolby Vision and Adaptive HDR is enabled, all HDR10 content is output at 8-bits instead of 10 or 12-bits.
I’m honestly shocked this is still an issue. It’s only an issue on their Amlogic-based cube devices, not on their Mediatek-based stick devices.
Shouldn’t be a difficult thing to solve, they just opt to output the UI at SDR YCbCr 4:4:4 8-bit Rec. 709 on Dolby Vision capable TVs, and then only switch to Rec. 2020 when HDR10 content is displayed, but it stays at 8-bit color depth.
On HDR10 TVs, if you have the bit depth set to max 12-bits in the settings, the UI is output at YCbCr 4:2:0 12-bit Rec. 709, and then it switches to YCbCr 4:2:0 12-bit Rec. 2020 when HDR is displayed.
If you have the max bit depth set to 12-bits, then the UI (and SDR/HDR10 content) should output at 12-bits on Dolby Vision capable TVs as well.
I figured with the hdmi 2.1 it would do just that. This is a color banding issue to tunnel the signal in this fashion. Deal-breaker. Only xbox or pc fixes this issue that I have found. Bummer
Any hope for being able to disable on the Firestick 4K???
Or is there a way??
If there IS a way I’m sure Elias or a visitor here knows how.
I just bought a FireTV Cude 3rd Gen and it hasn’t got the option to disable HDR!!!!
Did the setting ever come back for you ?
