TWRP custom recovery and Pre-Rooted ROM for Fire TV Stick are in the works

Now that TWRP and and a Fire OS 5 pre-rooted ROM has been released for the 1st-gen Fire TV, rbox is continuing his work to bring the same to the Fire TV Stick. He has teased what appears to be a functioning boot menu for the Fire TV Stick, so it looks like he has already made great progress. The Fire TV Stick poses several hurdles that aren’t present with the Fire TV. For starters, the absence of a standard USB port means rbox needs to find a way to control the bootmenu without a USB keyboard, like is required with the Fire TV 1 and 2. Not having an ethernet port on the Fire TV Stick may also pose a problem since TWRP does not currently have WiFi support. Rbox does not know when he’ll be releasing TWRP for the Fire TV Stick, so please don’t ask. He is currently working out issues that some people are experiencing with TWRP for the 1st-gen Fire TV, so it’s best to assume the Fire TV Stick files will be released at a much later date.

Is it only for 5.0.5? Or will there be any hope for

    • AFTVnews says:

Rbox does not release rooting methods. He just releases things that can be used on a rooted device. The Fire TV Stick cannot be rooted on or newer, so those devices will not be able to use this TWRP when it’s released unless a new rooting method is discovered.

When can we expect a complete guide for the fire tv 1 like for the fire tv 2?

  3. Matt says:

Fire stick is easy hardware root. Looking forward to twrp :)

  4. Bob says:

The rooting guide currently shows KingRoot as the recommended method for rooting Fire TV Sticks on 5.0.0 or newer. Last I heard, this method was sketchy/unreliable for the Stick. Is that still true? Want to root and block updates but don’t want trouble.

I’d suggest waiting until rbox releases their custom recovery/rom.

kingroot will be needed initially but with a custom recovery the system rom can be replaced with a pre-rooted rom so kingroot will no longer be needed.

Correct me if I am wrong.

    • AFTVnews says:

Sorry. There was a mistake in the rooting starters guide that was sending Fire TV Stick selections to the Fire TV portion of the guide. I’ve fixed it now.

For Fire TV Stick owners, the recommendation is to stay on version 5.0.0 thru 5.0.5 by blocking updates, and do not root with KingRoot until TWRP and ROMs are released for the Fire TV Stick.

This looks promising for anyone stuck on needing root on firestick….
Im going to try it shortly.

It does sound nice but it seems the Play Store version does not seem to be available or the OP is mistaken.

It’s so nice to hear that a custom menu and rom are coming to the stick. Can’t wait to dork around on a rooted Fire TV Stick!!! Thanks rbox!!!
