Turn your Echo or Echo Dot into a night light with this clever Alexa skill

Night Light is an interesting new Alexa Skill that lets you use the blue LED light ring on the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot as a makeshift night light. It uses a clever trick that makes the Echo think it’s continuously responding, which in turn results in the light ring staying illuminated.

Once you enable the skill, just say “Alexa, start Night Light” and the Echo’s light ring will remain illuminated until you say “Alexa, cancel.” Alternatively, you can say “Alexa, start Night Light for [#] minutes” to illuminate the LED ring for a set period of time.

Since this skill is a bit of a hack, there is no way to control the brightness or color of the light. The blue light will also continuously pulse the entire time it is illuminated. The good news is that the skill is completely silent, so Alexa will not blurt out anything in the middle of the night when you use the skill.

While it’s probably not a good replacement for a true night light and it may not be bright enough for some people’s needs, it could come in handy when you need just a little bit of extra light in a pinch.

    Pulsating, can’t control brightness/color…Meh

I would question skills like this, forcing the hardware on a device to function in a way that it was not originally intended to could cause premature failure.

“makes the Echo think it’s continuously responding”… Isn’t it anyway :P

Rather use night light from a dollar store than risk breaking the Echo Light
